Top On My List

I've read at least two dozen books on money management and wealth creation, including the Rich Dad series (which is also great by the way), and I have to place this book in the number one spot. I've purchased copies for many friends and family members and continually recommend it to people in my seminars. I really believe it can change your life... it did for me.

I was working hard and earning a great income of more than $100k per year, but I was also spending it all. Then changes came and I plunged down, suddenly, to less than $35k per year. For some people that's a lot of money, but imagine you've been earning $35k per year and suddenly it fell to $15-18k - that's about what I felt like emotionally. Then I cam across Dave's materials and my life was literally unlocked.

I learned that I needed to manage my money to manage the rest of my life. I discovered that stress can disappear - even in the modern world - when you've taken care of your primary needs first and provided a security blanket for the future.

Today, I have a bank account that will keep me going for about a year even if my funds were completely cut of and, borrowing from another excellent book, I have multiple streams of income.

Since reading Dave's book, I've read the entire Rich Dad series, the Multiple Streams of Income and Multiple Streams of Internet Income books and many others on finances. They've all added to my life, but this book is the one that started my journey and gave me the needed principles to evaluate opportunities and options that come my way.

My favorite personal finance book

The original edition of this book was the first book I read on personal finance and I still think it's the best one out there. Dave's personal story of how he lived the "rich lifestyle" and then lost it all really speaks to the myth of "having it all". He makes the point that we don't have to "have it all" (or "own it all") to be happy. That said, he offers a very solid and straight-forward plan on how to break out of the debt cycle and save for the future. The book includes a number of ways to change your thinking and your habits to make you more financially secure.
Since reading this book, I have put many of his ideas into practice. There is nothing that has added to my personal happiness and security more than knowing I have an emergency fund to cover expenses if something unexpected happens. I am also almost debt-free and have money saved for retirement.
I have recommended this book to others and have even bought a copy (I originally read this at the library) just so I can read it again and lend it to friends. Everyone needs to read this book!

This book is AMAZING - if you're willing to change

Dave's principles are easy to apply for anyone, no matter their income. Even if you only make $24,000 a year, you can do this. The principles are simple: Live on less than you make, shed debt, don't borrow, invest wisely. The pervasive "gotta-have-it-now" conspicuous consumption mindset is addressed, in a no-nonsense style that still manages to convey warmth and caring.

He recommends extra jobs to increase income if the existing income is low. For those that view this as anti-family, consider two things: 1) Dave doesn't recommend it for the long term, only as long as is needed to get out of debt; and 2) financial freedom is a wonderful gift for your family. "Changing your family tree" is the aim. If you get out of debt, and teach your children the same principles of not spending money you don't have (i.e. borrowing), then you've changed your family for generations to come.

I did it; I got out of debt on a single-mom lower-than-national-average salary using Dave's principles. I dug out of a $24,000 pile of debt in sixteen months with this system. I am now debt-free, saving for retirement, setting aside some money for my son's education, and more financially secure than I have ever been. The plan works, if you work it. The key is personal responsibility.

Sure, Dave makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year - now. He didn't always, and the fact that he lived what he preaches makes this book credible, interesting, and relevant.

Grade 4 Up–In the late 1980s, DC Comics revamped many superheroes but realized that Batman should remain true to his 1939 history. According to the introduction, the editors also decided that the public needed to know more about Batman's early life as a vigilante, and Miller and Mazzucchelli came together to produce Batman: Year One. Originally released in 1988 in four parts, the stories have been combined into one book. Opening with the arrival of Lieutenant James Gordon in Gotham's police force, the story goes on to inform readers about the level of corruption permeating the force. They also witness Bruce Wayne's first encounter with the prostitute named Selina, who will become Catwoman. Wayne speaks to his dead father, asking for guidance, and is answered with a bat on the windowsill, and Batman is born. The remaining chapters highlight Gordon's continuing difficulties with the corrupt police force, Batman's early difficulties in protecting and using his arsenal of weapons, and the first villains he chooses to pursue. At the end of the book, readers are treated to some background on Mazzucchelli's art, the production of Year One, and details on Richmond Lewis's coloring techniques. Year One effectively justifies Batman with a story about Gordan

The year 1986 saw the rise of two of superherodom’s most critically acclaimed graphic novels: Alan Moore’s Watchmen and Frank Miller’s dystopian Dark Knight Returns. After Miller’s success with DKR, a stark depiction of Batman’s future, DC Comics charged Miller with a revamping of Batman’s origin in 1987, 48 years after Bob Kane and Bill Finger’s original take on the character. In his Introduction to the reboot, Dennis O’Neil, one of Batman’s premier writers in the 70’s, said that the retelling of the origin story was not about changing the story, but about modernizing and improving it: “It could be given depth, complexity, a wider context. Details could be added to give it focus and credibility” (O’Neil, 1). That was a heavy order for a medium considered childish fantasy, so did 'Year One' deliver?

In short - yup. Successfully meeting all of O’Neil’s criteria, Miller’s Batman: Year One, beautifully illustrated by David Mazzucchelli and colored by Richmond Lewis, has become the definitive Batman origin story. Not simply an explanation of how a man can dress up like a bat and effectively combat rampant crime, though such elements are included, Year One is more about making plausible WHY a man would need to dress up like a bat and fight crime, and how Gotham City would respond.

Like Watchmen and DKR before it, Year One ascends from children’s entertainment to something closer to literature. Though relatively brief, the story is complex (watch Gotham's #1 cop still come up short, justifying the extreme measures of Batman) and dramatic (two characters who endure trauma to ultimately adapt their problem solving strategies while maintaining moral rigor); if it did not make the story of Batman realistic, it made it mature and believable. This book is a must-read for all Batman or superhero fans and a great read for anyone at least marginally interested in the genre.

Perfect book for new readers -- to Batman, or to comics in general!

This collection is a great introduction not just to the character of Batman, but comic books in general. If you are a brand-new reader, and you're looking for either your first Batman book or your first book overall, this is an excellent choice. 'Batman: Year One' is the origin story as you already know it -- Bruce Wayne's parents are killed when he's a young boy, he leaves Gotham for a while and comes back ready to fight crime.

Frank Miller's telling of this tale shines in several lights. He's known for drawn-out character monologues, so you get plenty of frames with Batman or Bruce Wayne thinking to himself. This gives a great insight into the psychology of Batman and Wayne, who almost start to cement themselves as semi-individual characters -- you'll definitely pick up on this if you progress from here into other recommended reading such as 'The Man Who Laughs,' 'The Long Halloween,' 'Dark Victory' and more. The psychology behind Batman's early actions reveal a hero who isn't sure of himself, a detective whose prime mission is to investigate why he wants to be the Batman and what that really means.

We also get fully roped into Jim Gordon's world very early on. Gordon actually leads the story off, and we spend almost as much time with him as we do with Batman. He's new to Gotham, like Batman, and he's trying to make a name for himself within the crooked Gotham City Police Department. You'll read the very beginnings of Gordan's relationship with Batman, which obviously lays the groundwork for much more collaboration between the two characters.

I will note that I purchased the soft-cover trade paperback version of this book, with the red and black cover. The pages are glossy but not annoyingly so; if you're looking for the newspaper-type of print, you likely won't find that in any new printing anyway.

Art-wise, 'Year One' shows a very gritty and seedy Gotham, and Batman spends a lot of his time investigating the worst parts of town (where we're introduced to an early Catwoman too). The colors are dark and subtle, but it all works within Miller's moody writing; put it all together and you have a book that, like I wrote earlier, is simply perfect for new readers.

I'd highly recommend this as a gift as well, for anyone who hasn't read Batman's origin story in the comics. If you're a fan of the Christopher Nolan trilogy, definitely pick this up. I would tangentially recommend purchasing 'The Man Who Laughs' to get an early look at The Joker, then moving from there into 'The Long Halloween' and 'Dark Victory,' which have some more associated reading with them. These books will provide a well-rounded and extremely enjoyable look into the beginnings of Batman's career.

One of the best ways into modern Batman comics.

Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and this make up two of the most important story arcs and settings of tone for Batman. Both the Burton and Nolan run of films seem to have some tonal relationship to Miller's work on Batman. "Batman: Year One" goes back to the origins of Batman, without significantly changing those origins, but with Gotham City being more gritty and corrupt than before. Using Gordon as a primary protagonist in addition to Bruce Wayne, one gets a sense of the desperation of the Gotham.

While it is not as bleak as Dark Knight Returns, Year One does develop the noir elements of Batman and builds up his relationship in this noir context, Mazzucchelli's work is workman-like but furthers the genre feel of the book and conveys both emotions and grit. Wayne is shown as weaker and Gordon as more corruptible, but both develop into their current identities in this comic. One of the best ways into modern Batman comics.

Dear Candidate Buyers,

I am a Ph.D. student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in SUNY. I bought this book almost 2 months ago, and after buying from Amazon I used the book very often.

I am studying on Characterization of Dielectric Materials by a Microwave Non-Destructive method. The book is generally written good, but I do recommend this book to people studying and working on the special area of Characterization of Materials by Microwaves.

You can find in the literature lots of studies of the authors V. V. Varadan and V. K. Varadan, on characterization of materials by free-space non-destructive method. Their research group is one of the big scientic groups on Microwave NDT&E (Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation).

As a result, I rate this book 5 out of 5, but want to notify the prospective buyers of this book that this book is written for a book on a specific subject (characterization of materials by microwaves), it is not a text book (in my opinion).

A good introduction to the Safavid era

From the sixteenth until the early eighteenth centuries, the Safavid dynasty ruled lands stretching from modern day Afghanistan to Baghdad, and the Persian Gulf to central Asia. Yet despite its size and longevity, it has received far less attention from Western-language historians than its Ottoman contemporaries. While the Ottoman Empire is well-addressed by dozens of monographs, surveys and biographies of its central figures, the Safavids languish in comparative obscurity, enjoying a much thinner historiography.

This is just one reason why Roger Savory's book is to be appreciated. Whereas readers interested in Ottoman history have dozens of works to turn to if they wish to learn about its history, Savory's history stands almost along in providing an overview of the Safavid period. It is fortunate that it is as good as it is. In the space of ten chapters he covers the range of Safavid history, from its rise in central Asia to the growing frontier challenges that ultimately extinguished the dynasty. Though his focus is on the political history of the period, he addresses everything from the intellectual life of the empire to the role of international trade in its economy.

For this reason, Savory's book stands out as the indispensable starting point for readers seeking to learn about the Safavid period. Though it the majesty and splendor of its existence shine again, detailed and explained for everyone to understand. In this respect the author has done a service in taking this unjustly obscure period and illuminating it for English-language readers. It is hoped that more historians build upon this work and open up this era further for a curious audience.

About the Author

Dr. Kenneth Ragland is an emeritus professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Throughout his career, he taught courses in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, combustion, and air pollution control. His early research was on solid fuel ram jet combustion, and gaseous and heterogeneous detonations. His research at UW–Madison focused on solid fuel combustion of coal and biomass as single particles, combustion in shallow and deep fixed beds, fluidized bed combustion, and combustion emissions. He served as chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from July 1995 until his retirement in July 1999. In retirement his research has focused on the development of systems for planting, harvesting, and combusting biomass crops for energy. Currently, he is the vice president of Energy Performance Systems, Inc.

Dr. Kenneth "Mark" Bryden joined the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Iowa State University in 1998 after receiving his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Prior to his studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, he worked fourteen years in a wide range of engineering positions at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. This included eight years in power plant operations and six years in power plant engineering. More than ten of these years were spent in engineering management. Mark has an active research and teaching program in the areas of energy, combustion, and appropriate technology. He is particularly interested in biomass combustion and small cookstoves for the developing world. He is president of Engineers for Technical and Humanitarian Opportunities for Service (ETHOS) and is the program director for the Simulation, Modeling and Decision Science Program at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory. He teaches classes in combustion, sustainability, energy systems, and design for the developing world. He is the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, including three R&D 100 awards within the past five years.

Quite well written, but the sections on combustion thermodynamics are a little weak and don't address enough of the issues usually expected in the treatment of thermo. Unfortunately there just is not one book on the market that can be called THE combustion text.

Dennis L. Bolles has more than 45 years of experience in multiple industries providing business and project management professional services. Darrel G. Hubbard has over fifty years of broad experience in management, consulting, and technical positions. He provides professional services, conducts trainings, and gives seminars in the field of project management. Mr. Hubbard holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics with a minor in chemistry from the Minnesota State University at Moorhead. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Control Systems in California. Mr. Hubbard joined PMI in 1978 and was the PMI Standards Deputy Project Manager who provided leadership to the project core team with Mr. Bolles in the delivery of PMBOK® Guide Third Edition. This work fills a significant need for PMO leaders, worldwide, across all industries, and in both the Private and Public Sectors. Texts on PMOs usually suffer for lack of adequate coverage of the varieties of models that can be implemented, and the absence of grounding and relevant "in the trenches", real life stories and lessons learned. Both of these deficiencies have been beautifully recitified by Bolles and Hubbard, in a book that is the best of its kind. The inclusion of the in-depth theoretical underpinnings for designing, building and sustaining a "fit-for-purpose" PMO is balanced logically against the realities in the case studies provided. Very Highly Recommended!

Best OBJ-C Review book

This book is great. I've only read a few chapters, but I've understood more in a few chapters than in the last two books I've read in Objective-C. For example, I finally understand what Typedef and @selector() are used for, compared to the other books that explain them in a convoluted way or just touch upon them briefly and then move on.

I've read the Big Nerd Ranch guide and Stephan Kochan one, but this is by far the easiest read. I love it. Keep pumping them out man!

Very good book for getting a handle on the Russian Assault tactics down at Division and Regimental level. It makes clear the essential misunderstandings of NATO tactics. There was never going to be a simple charge straight at NATO troops who would then use firepower to destroy them.The Dynamism of the Russian approach made this a far more challenging opposition than we ever supposed.
