I've been a fan of Barbara Erskine's books since I first read Lady of Hay over twenty years ago. I wasn't over keen on her last book The Darkest Hour but feel she's back on track with this one.

Miranda, Andy to her friends, goes to stay in Sleeper's Castle to house sit for her friend Sue, who is going to Australia for a year. It comes at the perfect time for Andy as she has just lost her partner of ten years and also her home and possessions to her partner's ex-wife who appears to be slightly unhinged.

Staying at Sleeper's she meets lots of new friends. Ella and Roy run a bookshop in Hay, Sian is a friend of Sue's who lives nearby and Bryn is the gardener who comes and goes as he pleases and appears to be quite surly. Then we have the mysterious Meryn who is mentioned a lot but doesn't appear until half way through the book.

Andy is a sensitive person and can sense ghosts. When she stays in Sleeper's Castle she starts to 'time slip' in her dreams. She goes back to the time of uprising and revolution between Wales and England.

Here she encounters Catrin and her father Daffyd who live in Sleeper's centuries before. Their housekeeper, Joan and a young boy Peter also live there. Edmund, Joan's brother is called on to assist Catrin's father. He and Catrin fall in love but there are many obstacles in their path.

This book is all action. The happenings of the past and present combine. There are lots of factual people from the past in the story as well as the fictional characters. And let's not forget the mad ex-wife and a cat with a very supercilious expression.

This is a fantastic read. History abounds here and the fictional story is every bit as good. The writing is superb as usual. Be prepared for sleepless nights if you start this book. You won't be able to put it down.

As usual with Barbara Erskine's stories, the reader is catapulted back to a different time in history. This time it is back to the times of Owen Glendower and the wars for Wales's independence from the English. Switching back and forth from then to today we are immersed in intrigue, mystique, supernatural forces and true evil. Historically, the book is well researched and the town of Hay and its castle once more play a prominent part in this book as well as in the very well-known "Lady of Hay" by the same author.

i love the way she weaves plots between the past and present. Sleepers Castle is an excellent read! My only gripe is too few of her books are available on kindle in the US. All her books are available on kindle in the UK. Please redress this inequality!!

About the Author
Steven E. Schier is Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science at Carleton College, where he has taught the last thirty years. He also directs the Carleton in Washington program, an off-campus term of study he founded in 1983. Schier is the author or co-author of seven books, including Panorama of a Presidency: How George W. Bush Acquired and Spent His Political Capital (2008) which won an “outstanding academic book” award from Choice magazine. He has edited six books, including The Postmodern President: Bill Clinton’s Legacy in U.S. Politics (2000) and High Risk and Big Ambition: The Presidency of George W. Bush (2004). Schier has written about Obama’s election in his recent book The American Elections of 2008 (2008), coedited with Janet Box-Steffensmeier. His most recent works are the edited volumes Ambition and Division: Legacies of the George W. Bush Presidency (2009),Transforming America: Barack Obama in the White House (2011) and the thirteenth edition of Presidential Elections: Strategies and Structures of American Politics, coauthored with Nelson W. Polsby, Aaron Wildavsky and David A. Hopkins (2011).

Todd Eberly is Chair of the Political Science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He specializes in social welfare policy as well as partisanship and polarization in American politics. Professor Eberly’s first book, American Government and Popular Discontent was released in June, 2013. His second book, The Rise of Ideology in America, is expected from Rowman and Littlefield in early 2016. He is an advisor to Project Vote Smart and his analysis and commentary have been featured in the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, Public Radio/Television, ABC and Fox News as well as Al Jazeera America and CTV. He has served as an expert witness in Voting Rights Act challenges to gerrymandered Congressional districts and has consulted with the centrist organization Third Way. He was named one of the most influential voices in Maryland politics by Campaigns and Elections magazine. In 2010, the St. Mary’s College Student Government Association honored him with the Faculty Student Life Award. He lives in Southern MD with his wife and two daughters.

Butternut Lake: The Night Before Christmas By Mary McNear

This is the third book in a series about a small town Butternut lake and its people. I would recommend to start with the first book,
Butternut Lake and get to know the people and then continue with other books in the series. I have enjoyed getting to know the people of Butternut lake, they are ordinary people from anywhere USA. The next book is due out in May. I am anxious for its release.

A great Butternut holiday novella!

A great novella to keep Butternut alive until the 3rd full book in the series comes out next year! The book added more dimension to some of my favorite characters (and even added a few new characters). It reminded me why I love the Butternut series so much...

A fantastic addition to an awesome series...

So fantastic!! I have read the entire Butternut series and really enjoyed them. My sister also read them and made me aware that there was a Christmas novella to go along with it! It was fantastic and a wonderful addition to the series.

While it won't really put you in the Christmas spirit, it certainly will bring back most of the beloved characters from the series. The last book of the series didn't really include all of the characters we had come to love and I was so happy that this edition had just about everyone from before! It tells the really cute story of Caroline preparing for her second wedding and bringing her family and town together. Daisy comes home from college and Allie is soon to welcome her and Walkers baby.

As always there is a bump in the road and several surprises but in the end we learn a lesson and fall in love with Butternut all over again. I certainly wish this was longer as I have really come to love all of these characters. Really sad I have nothing else to read in the series.
