What i thought

I also agree with 'gunslinger' when I bought and read the book, the beginning seemed familar to me and i had to backtrack twice to make sure i wasn't reading the same book 'Claimed'. But im not sure who wrote what first, but i can tell you that as you read along you can tell its not the same book, it was just the beginning. Overall i loved it.

I love this series!

So you have NO business writing a review about a book you HAVEN'T read! I loved this book and was excited to see a 3rd in the Novikov Clan Series! It is a menage book, throw in some danger, and Alpha male types who make some stupid mistakes and it's a great book! Love Emma and her ability to see the picture as a whole and make some good choices when it comes to her life and love. Can't wait for book 4!

Third book in series

The other reviewer did not seem to look at the cover of this book since she did not see that this was the third book in the Novikove Clan series the previous book was Kate's Mates. It was a good book though the previous books had were polar bears while this one had brown bears and you hear little about the characters in the previous books. It can stand alone and still be a good book.

Where it all begins

I first read Hear the Wind Sing a good number of years ago; however, like many others reviewing this book, I did not "discover" it until after reading (or should I say "falling in love with") several other works by Murakami: A Wild Sheep Chase (which happens to be the final book of the "Trilogy of the Rat", of which Hear the Wind Sing is the first novel; although, to be perfectly honest, I think Sheep Chase works just fine as a standalone novel), Dance Dance Dance (a sequel to Sheep Chase, although again it works as a standalone), Hard Boiled Wonderland (my favorite Murakami novel), Norwegian Wood, Wind-Up Bird (this seems to be Murakami's most popular in the US, although not in Japan), at least one or two short story collections ... in other words, I was a pretty experienced Murakami hand before coming across his first novel. At the time, I remember enjoying it but thinking that it did not stack up to these later works I had already read and been blown away by ... if anything it felt a bit like a poor man's version of Norwegian Wood, Murakami's best-selling work that also deals with similar themes and is notable for also being relatively light on the "magical realism" which is now Murakami's hallmark. However, still not bad as a first novel by the author that at that time I would've called one of my favorite authors (perhaps even my favorite author).

Over time, however, I became a bit disillusioned with Murakami's recent offerings. Kafka still entertained, but seemed to be missing a bit of the mojo and originality that characterized his earlier works. After Dark was shockingly bad. Reading the first two volumes of 1Q84 was laborious work, and until volume 3 came out a year later I was honestly unsure whether the book was complete after those first two volumes or after three (and indeed, there are rumors--fanned by Murakami himself--that there might even be a *fourth* volume at some point). These recent works were still receiving remarkable critical praise, but it felt like reviewers were reading a different book than I was; I hadn't felt truly gripped or moved since reading Wind-Up Bird (which isn't even my favorite Murakami work, in large part due to the large amount of unfinished and unconnected story lines). Reading the most recent work, 1Q84, didn't leave me hungry for what was next; it rather left me nostalgic for Murakami's earlier works: less polished, but more profound, more compelling ... more fun. I started to worry a bit whether it was Murakami who was slipping, or whether I had simply fallen out of love with the unique world and words of Murakami Haruki. So, in that frame of mind, I picked up Hear the Wind Sing this past weekend to see if the old Murakami magic could be rekindled.

I was pleased to find out that yes indeed it could be. Hear the Wind Sing is clearly unpolished and rough around the edges, but it still has that Murakami mojo and clearly foreshadows the wonderful works that would follow it. Although the "magical realism" aspect is much more limited than in most of Murakami's subsequent works, it is still there (most memorable for me was the excerpt from the made-up Derek Heartfield story about the wells of Mars). Honestly, the seed of just about every theme and motif Murakami would eventually nurture into maturity in later works appears in this novel: wells, enigmatic women (who are often "missing" something), drinking, loveless sex, disillusionment, detachment, the passive Boku narrator, Western music, music stores, death, World War II, China, mistrust of corporations, the moon, nighttime, water (be it the rain or the ocean), elephants, alienation ... I could go on and on (even the seeds of Murakami's short-comings as an author are in here, including his maddening tendency to start but often not resolve disparate story lines, which works in smaller doses such as here in Hear the Wind Sing but is a detraction, for me at least, in some of his longer works where the threads seem to fray and unravel a bit by the end). Even in this short work, one could literally open any page and find at least one notable "Murakami motif". Despite its unpolished nature--or perhaps because of it--it made me hungry to go on and re-read some of Murakami's other (and even better) works that followed it. It also left me a bit bittersweet as well--despite critical acclaim that works such as 1Q84 are Murakami's magnum opus, I can't help but think that when all is said and done, we will look back on Murakami's works from the decade or so spanning the mid-80s to the mid-90s (roughly from A Wild Sheep Case through Wind-Up Bird, including his excellent short stories during that time) as the height of Murakami's creativity and talent.

In the end, although not his best work by any means, Hear the Wind Sing is still the departure point for what would become the literary phenomenon that is Murakami Haruki. I think it is too bad that Murakami has fought to keep this work (and Pinball, 1973) all but impossible to find for the English speaking audience, but I have the feeling that at some point these works will see the light of day again, even if it is not until after Murakami passes away (the potential for profit will be too unavoidable for the publishers, I believe). Personally, I hope that the Murakami fan does not have to wait until his passing for that day to come, however. Rather than try to hide these early works, I wish Murakami would actually embrace them and even re-read and learn from them. I hope my prognostication about Murakami's golden age being long past is incorrect, but after reading every work since Wind-Up Bird thinking "is *this* the one?" (with the nuance changing from "is this the one that will be remembered as Murakami's greatest work?" to the more despairing "is this the one where Murakami finally gets his mojo back?") with the answer being "no" each time, I worry my fears may be true. If so, that makes his earlier works all the more precious. If you are a Murakami fan, do yourself a favor and track down this book to see where Murakami started; it is a short read that will be well worth your time.

The work of a young writer

Although readable, this is not an accomplished work. It feels very much like what it is: the work of a young writer. Few of his novels are truly linear, but this is more stream-of-consciousness in approach. One can see the seeds of the mature Murakami, though to read this, one would not guess at the illustrious career to come. Typical of his later work, the main character is an unnamed young man, and various people come in and out of his life. His bar-buddy “Rat” will appear in several of his major novels to come. The narrator and Rat become writers, and the most interesting part of the "Wind/Pinball" edition is Murakami’s preface about how he became a writer. Although this is often referred to as the first in the "Rat Trilogy," it is not essential to the enjoyment of his tour-de-force, "A Wild Sheep Chase." The short episode of the Martian Wells is a glimpse of his future writing.

For fans of 'A Wild Sheep Chase' and 'Dance, Dance, Dance'

It's shorter than I expected, (the book itself is about 5 x 3 inches, so good for a pocket, I suppose), but it's good Murakami. Offers some back-story on characters from Sheep Chase and Dance, and while nothing really mystical or surprising happens it's interesting to read through earlier work by the author. It struck me that his protagonist, who is the same as in Sheep Chase and Dance, is, like the author, much younger and with very different priorities than in the later works. He also has a different outlook, seems more human and vulnerable (not quite as Sam Spade as the author's later characters) which again gives the reader an interesting glimpse of the author as a younger, less experienced author. The translation's not as great as his newer stuff, which I've read he translates himself, but hey, it's "new-to-me" Murakami, so who the hell's complaining?

Beautiful and helpful cards

I really really love these cards, but I give them 4 stars, which I will dwell deeper later as to why.
First off when I first opened this deck, the energy was just so peaceful and uplifting! The colors are vibrant and and the borders of the cards are so beautiful, colorful and different ! :)
The illustrations on this deck is beyond gorgious, there are some real looking people illustrations, but they aren't very creepy looking (example in energy oracle cards) and the art in this deck varies and has animals with polar bears in the card "surrender to recieving support and love" and dolphins in the card "surrender to miracles" , cards of people, cards of nature and places (such as a beautiful clocktower on the card "Surrender to devine timing" and a mysterious and mesmerizing castle in the card "surrender to silence". The art is so magical breathtaking that the artist of these cards needed a little more attention than the tiny tiny little 5 word sentence at the back of the "booklet" all the way on the bottom, and at the back of the box in tiny letters, this is one of the reasons I give these cards 4 starts and not 5, when they should have added her name on the front of the box or the book instead of what they did, seems kind of unfair!

Anyway, speaking of the "booklet" itself, this deck does not come with a book like all other Hay house lifestyles decks, it honestly dissapointed me, because it's just a 9 or 10 inch piece of paper folded 3 times to get a lousy 4 or 5 pages out of it. And in this phamplet type booklet all it has is about the cards, how to use the cards and about the author and that's it. Okay so maybe these cards don't need any spreads at all, but I would have liked to see extended messages for each card, you know a more in depth meaning of every card like with all other oracle card decks, nope this deck doesn't have it except what you see on the card itself, it's nice and all but sometimes you need a more in depth meaning if you don't understand, esspecially with begginers and ones who don't like to rely on their intuition. But maybe this won't be a problem for anyone else. These are still very beautiful and uplifting cards, the box is sturdy, the card stock is good, and the cards even have gilded edges, the artwork is magnificent and the messages are quite decent, my only complaints have been just with the artist being mentioned in tiny letters at the back of the phamplet on the bottom and bottom back of the box instead of being mentioned somewhere where people could actually see, and that the booklet is a dissapointment, but overall I would recommend this deck.

Update: I've been using these cards alot since I've got them and they have come to be one of my favorite decks, they are always pretty dead on and still bring a sense of calm and peace within me, I also no longer really care that there's no booklet with more explanations, now that I've worked with them for so long, I really don't need any explanations at all, so changing my 4 stars to 5 stars.

Elegant Wisdom in a Box

I treated myself and two of my friends to Dr. Orloff's "The Power of Surrender" cards this holiday. Very impressed with the presentation: compact and well-designed card storage box; substantially-sized cards with a weight that feels just right when hand-held; gorgeous images; elegant and classy gilded card edges; thoughtful meditations. I can only describe the feel of the cards in my hands as "Silky!" Tried for the first time this morning, after wrestling with something that happened on Christmas Day and really feeling "irked!" The card I chose was titled: "Surrender Obsessive Thinking" and then went on with 4 more lines of Pure Wisdom. Feel blessed to have this beautiful new tool to use whenever I need it - for guidance, support and wisdom. Thank You Dr. Judith Orloff for your insightful books and now for these truly wonderful cards. Highly Highly Recommend!

Theses cards are magic!!

How do the cards know?! Dr. Orloff must have put some serious magic into these cards. No matter what topic I am using them for, they give me the exact punch in the gut perfect response to the situation. Its so crazy how these cards just know the right thing to say at the right time. I even had a friend use them and we both fell into a fit of laughter when she chose her card because it was so spot on. We couldn't believe it. Besides being extremely helpful and clarifying, the cards themselves are incredibly beautiful. The illustration for each card is so so pretty and the back of the deck is such an uplifting inspiring picture. I also LOVE how the sides of all the cards are gold. This deck is just a truly wonderful thing to have!!

French author/illustrator Barroux Found A Soldier's Diary Among Some Belongings Being Discarded On The Street And Decided To Depict This Young Man's Words In The Graphic Novel Format. The Diary Covers The First Two Months Of World WarI, as seen from the perspective of a French infantryman. The story is both fascinating and frustrating, as we read about the boredom and confusion experienced by soldiers who spend most of their time walking, digging trenches, waiting for letters, looking for shelter, and wondering where the war is, exactly. Once in a while they will see a plane overhead, or hear artillery fire off in the distance, or have to hide from the enemy. Instead of the usual "big picture" focus garnered from textbooks, readers see the war as a microcosm, as told by one of its thousand moving parts. Barroux's illustrations were created with thick butcher's pencil on watercolor paper, which were then covered with a tinted varnish. The overall effect is of black-and-white drawings seen through a sepia-toned filter, which make the pictures look as old as the story itself. A day in the life

Apparently the artist Barroux found this diary of an unknown French soldier from WW1 as he was walking past a house having a clear out - the diary was amid the junk headed for a landfill! He took it home, illustrated the diary and this is the book: Line of FIre: Diary of an Unknown Soldier.

The diary covers the first two months of the conflict from France’s declaration of war to September 1914. The diary is sparse with only a line or two to describe the soldier’s day but, as Michael Morpurgo (author of War Horse) points out in his introduction, the soldier was no Sassoon or Owens, trying to make art from his experiences, he was simply describing his everyday lot. As a result we get a very clear-cut view of his day to day life.

The first half of the book reads a bit like a description of the world’s worst package holiday. The soldier signs up, is transported near the front to fight the Prussians, but spends most of the time doing exercises, digging trenches, and looking for food and a decent place to spend the night. He occasionally mentions his family and that he receives bad news and then good news from them but we never know exactly what that means.

Gradually he mentions scenes of bombed out towns, empty shells littering fields, impromptu graves, and the sounds and lights of explosions keeping him up at night, so we experience his progress getting closer to the front at the same pace that he does.

There’s a very humanistic scene when he finally sees battle and discovers he’s been shot in the arm. He holds out a bandage pack out to a fellow soldier he doesn’t know, who’s also not a medic, who immediately sees to his arm, even with shells and mortars flying around them. And yet its told in a very matter of fact tone which makes it all the more touching.

The diary ends abruptly in September 1914 with the soldier recovering from his wounds and feeling depressed that the German army has gotten so close to his home town. Did he die shortly after? Did he lose interest in keeping a diary? Did he see out the war and live happily ever after? We’ll never know. Barroux does mention that accompanying the diary was a notebook of songs that continues until May 1917 so, assuming it also belonged to the same soldier, perhaps the soldier made it that long.

Barroux’s art is quite child-like - triangles for noses, a dot and a line for eyes, blanks for mouths - and the pencil and ink sepia tone adds a poignant sense of time to it. I’ve never seen Barroux’s art before so I don’t know if he’s intentionally keeping things as spare as the writing but the style perfectly suits the material.

It’s 100 years ago this year that WW1 began and yet forgotten mementos from that war still pop up and its unknown ghosts continue to speak to us in voices as fresh and human as any you’d hear today. I wouldn’t say Line of Fire is an amazing first hand account of the war, mostly because of the brevity of the writing, but it is a good example of living history and it does remind us of the mundanity of war as much as its horrors. Line of Fire is a brief but insightful look into the day-to-day life of a WW1 soldier.

About the Author
One of the most innovative strategists in the country, Erica Payne is at the forefront of an effort to build a modern progressive movement. Payne is the Founder and Principal of The Tesseract Group a boutique consulting firm that provides strategic counsel and communications expertise to major foundations, private philanthropists, and select organizations. Prior to founding Tesseract, Payne co-founded the Democracy Alliance, a donor collaborative whose partners have invested over $100 million in progressive organizations.

Prior to this, Payne served as Deputy National Finance Director for Democratic National Committee during the 1996 presidential re-election campaign and as a consultant to a number of campaigns and political organizations. In addition to her public sector work, Payne has held senior marketing positions in the private sector.

Payne has an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at UPenn and a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has appeared on MSNBC and has written for the Huffington Post. She lives in New York.

Industrial-era directory with little added value

I eagerly anticipated this book's arrival, believing from the title that it might actually contribute to my thinking on how to build a twenty-first century political movement (I support Reuniting American and the Transpartisan Alliance with public intelligence in the public interest).

Nope. This is an industrial-era directory with almost no added value. Seventy nine organizations are profiled in small print in hard copy, followed by snapshot bios of some of the activists.

Organizations that are NOT on the left (which has hijacked the term "progressive") but rather centrist, postpartisan, transpartisan, or nonpartison are NOT included here, for example, The New America Foundation, World Index of Social and Environmental Responsibility, Reuniting America, the Liberty Coalition, and on and on and on.

I checked the website, hoping for an interactive online version of the book that might be useful, but found it to be merely an advertising site.

In brief: a lot of work went into this book, the editor and those involved in the book got a lot of face time with many good people doing important work in isolation from one another and from the rest of us, but the book does NOT advance participatory deliberative democracy in any significant way.

Erica Payne assembled a committee of experts to determine which organizations are leading the effort in developing and marketing those raw materials and the book contains information on each. It's the Zagat's of progressive politics! Payne's book is a must for anyone in the Democratic party or interested in political change.

I was somewhat disappointed. I was expecting more "content oriented" and, instead, received a listing of persons and organizations. I would not recommend this text unless you were looking for someone in particular to contact or a particular organization and could not find an address.

I am afraid it will sit on a shelf or be donated to the trash.

Andrew Weil

Excellent information from an eminent Physician!

In my experience, Andrew Weil, M.D., is quite rare among Physicians, in that he is absolutely committed to open, and accurate, sharing of health care information. His approach to INTEGRATED MEDICINE, along with his many years of clinical experience, provide priceless insight into achieving a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
