Walker Callaghan has just arrived at the Academy after a tragic car accident. “Is this heaven or is this high school?” she asks.

She finds out her new life is a bit of both as she falls in love with tat-covered, bad boy Daniel Reid who is about to break the only sacred rule of this place. He's looking for a portal to return back to the living realm.

He needs just one hour to retrieve his younger brother who strangely never arrived at The Academy. Bobby is an Earth Bound Spirit, stuck at a plane crash site that took both of their lives as their rich father piloted his private jet nose-first into a cornfield on Christmas Eve.

Walker loves Daniel and risks it all to go with him.

Unique plot with great characters!

INITIAL THOUGHTS

I saw the cover and was immediately intrigued. It’s mysterious and creepy. I love it. Then I read on the bottom of the cover: “High school for the recently departed.” I was hooked. I have definitely never read anything about high schools for dead kids. I had to read this. Plus, it looks like a bit of a romance. Count me in!

WHAT I LIKED

The romance. Walker and Daniel. I absolutely loved their relationship. It starts out rocky because Daniel clearly likes to be left alone and doesn’t want anything to do with Walker. But Walker is persistent, and they end up being sort of friends, which eventually turns into something more. I love the gradual growth of their relationship. I love that he slowly lets her in. I love that they need each other, even when they don’t realize it. I just LOVED them. And I want to see more!

Unique plot. First you got the main part of the story: everyone at this school is dead, and they’re caught in between, like a limbo-sort-of place. Then, you have Walker, who meets Daniel, who is trying to get back to life to save his younger brother. Awesome. Love, love, loved it. It’s probably the happiest I’ve ever been to read about dead people. This is so unlike anything I have ever read, so I was on the edge of my seat.

The family bonds. This had me feeling all the feels. Walker’s relationship with her mom. Daniel’s relationship with his siblings. It was all so heartbreakingly wonderful. In a world where there could be so much heartache and sadness, the love that these people have for each other is incredible. Sorry, I don’t mean to get all sappy, but it got to me. C.L. Gaber did an awesome job.

The deceased celebrities! Ahh! Can you imagine going to a school where Kurt Cobain is your music teacher, Heath Ledger is your drama teacher, and Walter Payton is your coach?! Being dead may not be so bad after all! Of course, it got me a little teary-eyed reading about all of them, especially Heath. He was one of my favorite actors, and his death still gets to me. But, it was really nice to see him and the rest as characters in this book. Plus, it was done so well. I loved it.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE

Hmm. I didn’t give this book 5 hearts because there was just something that bugged me, and I just can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it was the high school stereotypes or the constant references to a particular character’s weight or everyone making fun of Walker’s name (which got old). These were all very minor issues and did not ruin the book for me, but I guess it kept me from feeling that “OMG” feeling.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Really good book! I want more. Like right now. It ended perfectly, but there was also a bit of a cliffhanger, and I just HAVE to know more. I’m so curious as to where this story is going to go. And now that I have heard that there are two more books in the series, I’m so upset that I have to wait, but at the same time, I’m ecstatic that I get to read more about these awesome people! I will be impatiently waiting for books 2 and 3!!!

I had spent many years doing US and Norwegain research on the Norwegian parts of my husband's and my family. There were constant questions I had about life in Norway before the families immigrated. It was frustrating since no one seemed to know the answers to my questions. When I found this book and read it, I was thrilled since finally there was good explanation of what life had been like in Norway. I have recommended this book to many people interested in Norwegian culture, and this evening I am ordering a copy for a cousin. The information is presented in an easy-to-read style, and covers many aspects of life.

This is a great book!

This was a great book with a wide variety of monologues to choose from. The commentaries were extremely helpful when I had to perform one of the monologues in class and did not have time to read the play. The best part about having so many great piece to choose from is that I could always find the perfect monologue for class, auditions, etc. This book is worth buying...I have used it many times!

The previous editions are fairly well known to otolaryngology trainees. Organized into 11 chapters, the book reviews topics in rhinology, otology, laryngology, head and neck cancer, facial plastics, trauma, sleep medicine, and endocrine and salivary gland surgery. The fourth edition also introduces a pediatric chapter that consolidates materials specific to the pediatric population that had previously been scattered throughout various sections in previous editions. In addition, there are 4 appendices that offer easy-to-access information on cancer staging, cranial nerves, vaccinations, and anesthetic agents and considerations. The body of the text retains its standard structure of bullet-point, outline format writing.

Informative and concise, Pasha and Golub s pocket handbook is often thought of as the essential quick reference text for residents and medical students. Small enough to fit into white coat pockets (although rather hefty), its bulleted format allows readers the ability to review a topic in a brief amount of time. About the Author
Raza Pasha, M.D. Dr. Pasha is a Board Certified Ear, Nose, and Throat-Head and Neck Surgeon with extensive training and research experience. He is a sole author of a highly rated comprehensive review book on his specialty. To receive certification from the American Board of Otolaryngology, Dr. Pasha completed an undergraduate degree, four years of medical school, and five years of specialty training. Dr. Pasha has been published in many medical journals and completed research in many institutions, including The Cleveland Clinic, Texas Medical Center, Detroit Medical Center, and Ohio State University. His has also published a review book on Ear, Nose, and Throat-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Pasha is a strong advocate for patient education. He believes that maximal therapeutic benefit occurs when patients understand their diagnoses and therapy.

Justin S. Golub, MD is an otology/neurotology/lateral skull base surgery fellow at the University of Cincinnati. He completed residency in otolaryngology head and neck surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle and obtained his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. During his training, he has completed research fellowships at the University of Washington and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the author of more than twenty peer-reviewed publications in otolaryngology. Dr. Golub's professional interests include regenerative medicine, otologic bioprostheses and medical education

Hard to use

The information in the handbook is good, if you can find it. The appendix is useless. If you have a lot of time to search thru the handbook than it would be ok, but if you trying to quickly look something up it's frustrating.

Great asset on the floors

Excellent resource for quick information and a good size for my white coat pockets. The binding is just big enough to fit all the sheets of paper in it, which makes it a but hard to turn the pages without bending them.

Not well organized...

not well organized. my medicine book was much better. the h. lane handbook is larger but better. get it if you want, it wasnt horrible. i am not getting the ICU version as a result of the poor quality of the peds book.
used book for 2 months and the bindings have started to breakdown.

LIKES - decent material, easy to use after you have studied the book for hours.
CONS - having to study this book for hours to get familiar with the layout.

Lifting Our Thoughts

One beautiful way of lifting our thoughts to a higher level and thus raising our energy is to tap into a stored memory of joy, love or self-confidence. It takes only a few moments to make this happen.

Choose a time when you felt full of joy, love or self-confidence. You can choose another high-energy feeling if you wish. Close your eyes for a few minutes and picture how you felt at that time. Remember it with all your senses. As you breathe in and out, feel that experience all through your body.

The HeartMath Institute suggests that you place your hand over your heart during this exercise. After a few minutes, you can open your eyes. Practice this a few times to establish this memory within you.

When you feel yourself filling with emotions like fear or anger, place your hand over your heart and watch how the negative feelings are replaced by feelings of joy and love. Remember that everything begins with a thought. A thought of fear leads to a feeling of fear. A thought of resentment leads to feelings of anger. When you become willing to get out of your head and come from your heart, your feelings change to loving feelings.

John Grassi, a teacher I had in graduate school, told me a wonderful story to illustrate this. At recess one day, two young students were getting ready to have a fight. A girl caught the attention of one of the boys and put her hand over her heart to remind him to come from his heart. In turn, that boy put his hand over his heart and stopped acting out his anger. The second boy saw this gesture, put his hand over his heart-and the fight was over.

It is such a simple exercise but it works every time we have the willingness to change.

Neale Donald Walsh writes, "The Highest Thought is the thought which contains joy. The Clearest Words are those that contain truth. The Grandest Feeling is that which you call love. Joy, truth and love. These three are interchangeable, and one always leads to the other. It matters not in which order they are placed."

Here are some questions you can ask yourself that will help you begin the Heart-Lightening Process. Take plenty of time and remember, there are no right or wrong answers:

• Can you see where you fit on the energy scale?
• What are you holding on to that keeps you from moving up to the next level?
• What are your obstacles to finding your higher purpose at this time of your life?
• What interferes with you knowing God?
• What blocks you from experiencing a light heart?
• What blocks you from reaching a higher state of consciousness?
• What are you holding on to that keeps you from feeling joy

Guided Imagery for Healing

Here is a guided imagery that can help connect you with a higher frequency of energy for faster healing:

Imagine that you have a cord connected from the top of your head reaching up to all the energies of the universe. You can feel it vibrating. See a glow of light all around you, expanding wider and wider until all you see is light. Feel it vibrating as you sit in the center of all this energy. Feel your entire body alive and connected to this higher frequency. Feel yourself surrounded by love. In this powerful place, say to yourself, All the energies of the universe are healing my body today. See this manifesting. Know this is a reality.
