For use only by advanced students

This book is less of a mathematics text than it is a refined collection of lecture notes. The authors, Anthony and Biggs, both LSE professors, present the material in as few words as possible. They have omitted the depth of explanation which users of modern college textbooks have come to expect. Indeed, they get right to the point with few illustrations, few examples and few exercises for students to work (and no solutions with which to compare).

Without a solid (and recent) background in higher algebra and calculus and a good understanding of basic economics concepts, students will find this book to be challenging. Advanced economics students, on the other hand, will find it to be a handy reference.

One can't help but think that this volume was born out of necessity: a textbook written by an educator because no other suitable text yet exists. Think of Paul Samuelson's first edition of 'Economics' in 1948. (In fact, Anthony's and Bigg's book bears a striking resemblance in style to Samuelson's original. An ode, perhaps?) Let's hope that this book, like Samuelson's original, evolves into a more comprehensive volume.

Timeless

Without a doubt, this is a timeless masterpiece that every business major should have. I used it as the required text in a freshman calculus class in a BBA program, along with some vanilla calculus supplemental material. Works perfectly for that, and while a little over the head of many students at that level, it gives them one book that they can keep forever, and look back on, someday hopefully seeing all the beauty of it.

An Excellent Addition to Stan's Other Books

This book is a great addition to Stan's other offerings. In this book, Stan presents a few more recent Bigfoot sightings and experiences, but mainly he presents a lot of cryptid/alien being sightings and experiences. As he does in his other books, Stan merely presents the eyewitness accounts for readers to consider and draw their own conclusions. If you liked Stan's other books or if you like reading about cryptid encounters, then this is a book that you should read.

An Interesting Read

Stan Gordon gives us the facts of a number of reported sighting of weird things in Pennsylvania. He avoids speculating on the causes and presents case where he has, for the most part, personally gathered information. An interesting read, that is made all the better by the lack of far out theories.

I loved reading this book!! All very detailed, well investigated eyewitness reports of all kinds very strange Pennsylvania creature encounters. From Bigfoot to lake monsters to Gargoyles! Pennsylvania is truly the land of the strange and there is no better researcher to put this all together like Stan Gordon. He is been out in the field (not just behind a computer) investigating all these incredible accounts for 56 years..Pennsylvania is truly a hotbed for this stuff..we know because Stan Gordon documented all of it. He is a true American Pioneer.

Looking for a hot, bad boy?

Something Firece starts with Tristan's room-mate and lover walking out on her. They haven't really been in a relationship more like roommates with benefits. Even though Tristan isn't really sorry to see him go it leaves her in a bind. She really needs another roomie to cover half the rent. In comes Kash. recommended by a friend he is new to town and needs somewhere to stay. While looking intimidating with a fighters body and guarded personality Kash and Tristan get on really well. Too well. Kash really isn't looking of a relationship and Tristain is leery about dating a roommate again.

Their relationship is complicated by the fact Kash isn't being open about his line of work. While not lying, he doesn't come clean to Tristan and in the end she finds out by accident. By this stage the physical attraction gets the better of them. I did have one moment when they are making out and Kash is still covered in an opponents blood that I found a little off-putting. But then things got steamy and I let it go. Even before they get out of bed Kash is regretting them being together. In his brutal Kash style he tells Tristan.

Kash doesn't want a relationship but you can see he really likes Tristan. His hot and cold act towards Tristan did dive me a little crazy. Thankfully it didn't last long. Kash is gritty and unapologetic about what he does. At the same time he is uneasy about Tristan knowing what he does and why. Tristian, Kash and their friends seemed a little young in some regards. Something Fierce almost had a bit of a new adult feel about the storyline. Saying that the content was defiantly all adult with a decent dose of sex and some violence. After all Kash is a cage fighter. I liked the Jenika Snows writing style she created believable, interesting characters and kept me reading to see if Kash and Tristan could work through their issues.

This is the first book in The Underground series by Janikia Snow. I have read all of the three books in the series. I must say I really liked this one and the third in the series Deeper . The second book I didn't connect with the charcters quite so much. Anyway start of with Something Fierce and see what you think!

First book in an amazing series

In this story we meet two people who are complete opposites of each other. You have Kash who is tattooed, pierced, and a cage fighter, then we has Tristan who is sweet, average, and lonely. It starts off as Tristan's roommate\lover moves out. Then a friends recommends Kash as a roommate replacement.

The relationship starts off good but as Kash isn't really opened with what he does, it does become kinda strained. I don't want to give anything away, but one thing that was a little off putting was has Kash acted. He was back and forth on how he treated Tristian.

Other than that this story is an amazing starts to a new series. I have already bought the other two book that come next and can't wait to read them! Enjoy!

Tristan just found out that her roommate is leaving without giving her any notice, so with her house payment due Tristan knows she needs to find a new room mate soon. When her friend tells her that her boyfriends long time friend is moving to town and looking for a place Tristan knows she has finally found her new room mate. Then Tristan meets him, Kash is frightening, he's huge, he has tattoos everywhere, and he's huge(yes I said that twice). But as Tristan gets to know Kash she see's there is more under the surface and that Kash is hiding behind his big wall.

There's an instant attraction both Tristan and Kash feel for one another but both try to fight it, till one night at a party a guy try's to hurt Tristan and Kash comes to her rescue. Now Kash and Tristan see that they are not only attracted to each other but that they care about the other, but Kash has had a hard life and he's hiding not only his past from Tristan but what he does for a living. When Tristan finds out she has to decide if the Kash she thought she knew is the real Kash or if this new Kash is the true Kash. As Tristan and Kash continue to grow closer Kash's beliefs about himself threaten to keep Tristan and Kash apart. It soon becomes clear that they will both have to decide if they should move on or risk it all for each other.

I loved this book Kash was hot, possessive, strong, powerful, fierce and protective. He was a great hero that was easy to love. I flew through this book because it was so good. I wish it was longer so we could have went deeper into Kash's past and more in depth into Kash and Tristan's future but even with that said this was a great book. Jenika Snow did a great job and is a fantastic author, I've never read her books before but I will be checking out her other books in the future. I love that this is a series with different main characters in each book, and we meet the hero and heroine for book two in this book. I also loved that this book in in both Kash and Tristan's point of view. This is one of those books that I overlooked for a while and then I found again, and I'm so lad I did.

Can't get enough of Rae and Wulf story!

I can't believe all these happened mostly within a day! The story, as expected, is equally captivating and sigh-inducing. I can't help it! It's just a short story but it will definitely satisfy your craving for swoons!

Wulfram is just the perfect book boyfriend ever, and Raegan is just adorably country - they may have grown up in a very different social stratum, yet they are perfect together. I do not see myself getting tired of reading about my favorite couple! And to think it all started with a hot night agaist the wall with a Blonde Hottie!

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
In this story we catch up with Rae and Wulf before their wedding and we find out about the events that took place before the wedding that were mentioned in her book Nothing Else Matters. While this is a short read, I enjoyed it as I have enjoyed reading her other work. This story left me wanting for more and it also showed where other stories can and most likely will evolve. I just can't wait to see what happens next with her characters!!

I always love Ms Babylon's characters

This one answered some questions that were rattling around about Rae and Wulf. I think, he'll always have a soft spot in my heart, because as controlling as he is, he has a heart that is in just the right spot, especially for Rae. I always love Ms Babylon's characters. They're deep and well developed. The stories are never straight forward but full of twists and turns that still get you to where you want to be in the end. And of course, this one ends where with the arrival of Georgie and Xan. It would almost be worth it to read some of these simultaneously, following the timeline to see exactly where everyone fits in.

Another hit, beautifully written, leaving me wanting the story to move forward from here. Well done!

Of particular interest is her execution of a discussion concerning how the hospital has become a tool for state building through making the state visible to citizens while making the body visible to the state.

Concise, well-written, complete guide to Southern Spain

Well thought out, comprehensive, travel guide that is the same dimensions as the Time Out Guides (which I love) so they are perhaps slightly too big for an average pants pocket (e.g. Top Ten/Wallpaper), but not bulky and hard to travel with (Insight/DK/Eyewitness/NatGeo/Fodors and some Framers). Fortunately, this Lonely Planet strikes a good balance between planning the trip and what to do once there. Sometimes Time Out is focused on getting there (planning/history) vs. walking you through a typical short vacation/tourist visit.

I could quibble with the organization of the Andalusia guide. For instance, it seems that "getting there" info should be first vs toward the back of the book and separated into "Need to Know" and "Transport" (these items should be co-located in the front); more color photos would be helpful; more info for LGBT travelers, including festivals/events, shopping and nightlife; and a better balance of listings between low-end and high-end shopping (as well as mens/womens shopping, furniture, antiques, art and hidden gems).

Buy overall this is a good comprehensive guide to Southern Spain for an occasional traveler.

Reconstructing Value provides a solid foundation for managers, stakeholders and students

“There is nothing so practical as a good theory” (Kurt Lewin, Field Theory in Social Science, 1951).
Reconstructing Value shows once again the abiding truth in Lewin’s famous statement. The book is a great resource combining innovative theories, practical suggestions for managers, and solid learning exercises. It also is chock-full of relevant references that are well integrated into the text and notes, so the foundations underlying the authors’ statements are clear and traceable.

The authors make a compelling case that managing for sustainability requires integrating three perspectives: “Embeddedness,” i.e. that the economy depends upon the health of human societies which in turn depend on the health of the biosphere, so that economic health cannot be achieved without the help of societies and the biosphere; a “sustainability mindset” that synthesizes techno-centric and eco-centric perspectives rather than favoring one to the exclusion of the other, thus making equitable human development a key factor in the sustainability equation; and “system transformation,” i.e. the need to change fundamental beliefs about the organization and its relevant systems in order to achieve new and emergent benefits at societal and ecosystem levels.

These three perspectives - Embeddedness, Sustainability Mindset, and Systems Transformation – are crossed with “four phases of value reconstruction” (all conveniently beginning with the letter “R”) to create the comprehensive matrix framework that underlies the entire book. The four phases are: “Rethinking” underlying assumptions; “Relating,” i.e. newly considering the host of relationships relevant to sustainability, including those that cross regions, generations, business ecosystems and their stakeholders, etc.; The strategies, plans, and actions practicing managers take in “Responding” to sustainability challenges; and finally, “Reinventing,” the phase in which innovations coalesce and enable the organization to, according to the authors, “shift in its current trajectory.” In sum, the journey to sustainability is truly one in which the value of the organization, its services, and products is truly reconstructed.

The book’s subtitle, “Leadership Skills for a Sustainable World,” provides an additional set of focusing concepts. The authors align four different thinking skills - Critical Thinking, Complexity Thinking, Strategic Thinking, and Design Thinking - each with one of the four phases. This provides a structure for building leadership skills as the book progresses. Each chapter develops a set of skills while explaining how to move an organization through each the four phases, and concludes with well-designed learning exercises that can be used by teams of practicing managers or students.

To accomplish transformation and reconstruct value, “triple-loop” learning is required. Building on the work of Chris Argyris, Donald Schon, and others, the authors distinguish between single-loop learning that asks, “are we doing things right;” “double-loop learning that asks “are we doing the right things;” triple-loop learning that asks “how do we decide what is right.” It is this last question that stretches leaders to reconsider their organizations’ various relationships and opens the door to systems transformation.

This book is extremely useful to three target audiences:
1. Executives, managers, and consultants who are seeking to influence their organizations in the direction of sustainability, i.e. for their organizations to provide products/services and use processes that preserve and create a livable world for future generations, rather than diminishing the quality of the Earth’s environment and its ability to sustain life as we know it.
2. Stakeholders of these organizations, including end customers, companies in their supply chains, other companies in their business ecosystems, shareholders, regulatory agencies, NGO’s, and others with a stake in their success.
3. Students and their teachers involved in educational programs focused on this meaning of “managing for sustainability.”
