The Cost of Liberty offers a sorely needed reassessment of a great patriot and misunderstood Founder.

It has been more than a half century since a biography of John Dickinson appeared. Author William Murchison rectifies this mistake, bringing to life one of the most influential figures of the entire Founding period, a principled man whose gifts as writer, speaker, and philosopher only Jefferson came near to matching. In the process, Murchison destroys the caricature of Dickinson that has emerged from such popular treatments as HBO’s John Adams miniseries and the Broadway musical 1776.

Dickinson is remembered mostly for his reluctance to sign the Declaration of Independence. But that reluctance, Murchison shows, had nothing to do with a lack of patriotism. In fact, Dickinson immediately took up arms to serve the colonial cause—something only one signer of the Declaration did. He stood on principle to oppose declaring independence at that moment, even when he knew that doing so would deal the “finishing blow” to his once-great reputation.

Dubbed the “Penman of the Revolution,” Dickinson was not just a scribe but also a shaper of mighty events. From the 1760s through the late 1780s he was present at, and played a significant role in, every major assemblage where the Founders charted America’s path—a claim few others could make. Author of the landmark essays Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, delegate to the Continental Congress, key figure behind the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, chief executive of both Pennsylvania and Delaware: Dickinson was, as one esteemed historian aptly put it, “the most underrated of all the Founders.”

This lively biography gives a great Founder his long-overdue measure of honor. It also broadens our understanding of the Founding period, challenging many modern assumptions about the events of 1776 and 1787.

About the Author

William Murchison is a widely published author, journalist, and commentator who specializes in historical and cultural subjects. A former editor at the Dallas Morning News, he is a nationally syndicated columnist and has contributed to the Wall Street Journal, National Review, the Weekly Standard, First Things, the American Spectator, Chronicles, the Washington Times, and other publications. Murchison holds degrees from Stanford University and the University of Texas and for five years served as Radford Distinguished Professor of Journalism at Baylor University. He lives in Texas.

Truly, and Always, An Indispensable Sort of Man

This is an engaging short biography of a Founder who deserves to be more widely known. John Dickinson is noted as the author of LETTERS FROM A FARMER IN PENNSYLVANIA and controversial for his refusal to sign the Declaration of Independence. As William Murchison makes clear, Dickinson was not opposed to American independence, but believed that it should not be declared until the colonies were better prepared for war with Great Britain. It is hard to see how that could have been considered unreasonable.

Can there ever be a time when there is not a place for the man or woman who will stand in front of those in a hurry to act and ask, "Are you sure about what you want to do?" If we might not always have a Dickinson, we will always have Murchison's book to remind the rest of us to ask those questions.

It seems to me that it would not be a bad thing for the country if each incoming president was required to read THE COST OF LIBERTY.

A Man of Wisdom; Neglected By History

William Murchison has written an outstanding biography of John Dickinson, a powerful account of a Founding Father who, for years, has stood in the shadows of our understanding of the birth of this republic.

Having recently read Our Lives, Our Fortunes and Our Sacred Honor: The Forging of American Independence, 1774-1776 I had to order this book, as so much of the work by Beeman on American independence was focused on the non radical element of men attending the Constitution Convention in Philadelphia before the war began.

John Dickinson was foremost among the leaders of Pennsylvania, and was very cautious about relations with England, in the hopes that America could resolve the differences between the colonies and the Crown (mostly Parliament) and resume the peaceful and prosperous relations that had been the norm.
Even after the blood that was spilled at Lexington and Concord, men like Dickinson feared that emotions from the colonies in the northeast (primarily Massachusetts) would encourage Americans to embark on a journey of revolution that would, in the end, create more problems than solutions.

Dickinson was from a powerful family of Quakers with holdings in Pennsylvania and Delaware. In his youth he went to London and studied law at the Middle Temple. He was a scholarly man and attained much fame when he published Letters From A Farmer in Pennsylvania in November 1767, stating some of the causes of dissent among the colonists as a result of the misdeeds of the ministers of England, along with the Parliament, and a very stubborn George III.
Some called him the pen man of the revolution.

His caution during the first Congress was not solitary as many of the delegates were reluctant to break with England, but all were concerned about the precedent of taxation, the restriction of trade and the building of monopolies by England in the colonies. Dickinson was no exception and the most prominent of the men who wanted to proceed cautiously in dealings with London. All of this flew in the face of people like John Adams, who felt that the time of independence had come. We all know the result, and Dickinson has taken a back seat in the history of our country because of his caution and his devotion to his principles. There are also comparisons made between him and Edmund Burke, a champion of America in the British Parliament. While they were indeed kindred souls, they were both largely unsuccessful in their endeavors, and in the matter of Thomas Paine, his writings, while in no way nearly as educated and lofty as Dickinson's resonated with the average American and stole much of the thunder from Dickinson's Letters From A Farmer.

The book is very good and Murchison is a master of the King's English. For example, in dealing with the conflict between Adams and Dickinson, the author tells us: "Both were men of vast moral courage-but courage weighed from different sacks, upon scales differently balanced." In another passage: "The Stamp Act repeal was a political poultice laid on the injured relationship between Britain and her American colonies." There are many more fine examples that the reader can find in this delightful book.

I certainly have to give this five stars. I would also recommend The Men Who Lost America (The Lewis Walpole Series in Eighteenth-C) in order to better understand the fix that the British were in during this time.

A very enlightening and readable book about Dickinson and his times, who until I read this was only a name I knew. Especially interesting for me as a native of Pennsylvania now living in Delaware, the two states Dickinson lived in.

About the Author

Susan Ferguson is Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, where she has taught for almost 20 years. Ferguson regularly teaches Introduction to Sociology, and her critically acclaimed anthology, Mapping the Social Landscape: Readings in Sociology (McGraw-Hill, 2010) is used in introductory classes around the country. Ferguson also teaches courses on the family, medical sociology, the Sociology of the Body, and a new seminar on social inequality and identity. Ferguson has published in all of these areas, including the research collection, Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic (with co-editor Anne Kasper, Palgrave, 2000), and Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families (McGraw-Hill, 2011). In addition, Ferguson is the General Editor for “Contemporary Family Perspectives,” which is a series of research monographs and short texts on the family (Sage Publications).

Ferguson, who grew up in a working class family in Colorado, still considers the Rocky Mountains to be her spiritual home. A first-generation college student, Ferguson was able to attend college with the help of scholarships, work study, and financial loans. She majored in Political Science and Spanish and also completed certificates of study in Women’s Studies and Latin American Studies. After working a couple of years for a large research grant sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Ferguson entered graduate school and completed her master’s degree in sociology at Colorado State University and her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her areas of study are gender, family, women’s health, and pedagogy, but her primary enthusiasm is for teaching.

Awesome - If You Can Find It!

I teach an undergrad intro course in Women's and Gender Studies. I can't tell you how many potential texts I reviewed before FINALLY finding this one, which is the absolute best of the best. The theoretical underpinnings of the book are social constructionism and intersectionality -- and the chapters don't just pay lip service to these theoretical frameworks, they explain them and apply them in ways that make sense to college students. Every week I use selections from three books with each week organized thematically: this text, The Essential Feminist Reader (Modern Library Classics) and The Feminist Utopia Project: Fifty-Seven Visions of a Wildly Better Future. These books work very well in concert and the students can really sink their teeth into the content. My only complaint with Ferguson's text is it's lack of availability -- it's on backorder everywhere, including on Amazon, and there is no e-book version. Get this book. Use it. You will not be disappointed and neither will your students.

"Mormonism 101" by Bill MckEever and Eric Johnson is a book about helping you to understand Mormonism. This is not a pro-Mormon book it is a very honest look into Mormonism that holds nothing back. I really appreciated that it compared true Christianity to Mormonism which is its own religion and not Christian. It used Mormon's own doctrine and compared it to scripture like we are supposed to. I was very impressed on the detail the authors went thru for us readers to really understand the Mormons. I highly recommend this book.

This is my 4th book on Apache Cordova and by far the biggest book on the topic. I wrote this book while working as a project manager for SAP's Apache Cordova-based products and as a contributor to the Apache Cordova project. When you take this book along with my Apache Cordova API Cookbook, you have 800 pages of solid, easy to read (but technical) content on the topic. Anyone trying to get up to speed with Apache Cordova or Adobe PhoneGap development will find everything they need here.

About the Author
John M. Wargo is a professional software developer and a contributor to the Apache Cordova Project. He got started with mobile development while working at Research In Motion, now called BlackBerry, and eventually wrote the first book on BlackBerry development. From there he started working with and writing about Adobe PhoneGap and Apache Cordova; that led him to write four books on the topic.

He wrote a series of articles covering methods for mobilizing IBM Domino applications for The View, a magazine for IBM Lotus Notes and Domino developers, which was eventually published into an anthology.

He is currently a Principal Analyst for Forrester Research; serving Application Development & Delivery Professionals focusing on Mobile Development and Open-Source Software. Previously, he worked for SAP as the product manager for the SAP Mobile Platform's Hybrid SDK, a set of enterprise plugins for Apache Cordova, and the SAP Fiori Client, a Cordova-based native application runtime for the SAP Fiori web application.

This book should be title Apache Cordova 4 Tool Usage. It pretty much covers the tools and parrots the documentation. Its like wanting to learn iOS native programming and getting book on that only to find it spend 95% of the time covering Xcode. The author constantly says 'I'm not going to cover that here but I refer you to the documentation. There is one chapter where he builds a very simple app with almost no actual code as he uses a plugin and just spits out logs. You will not learn anything about Cordova programming from this. You will not even learn how to structure your projects other than a tiny bit of coverage where he say you wont normally do this if you're a good developer. Just a total waste of money.

I purchased this book just for chapter 16: Creating Cordova Plugins. I spent days trying to figure out "how" to develop them. I'm now going to read the rest of this book. Easy to understand, complex topic.s

Sataniel has all the character of a Jim Butcher creation and truly garners the reader's sympathy, attention, and fondness. This is a must-read for fans of theological fiction and dark fantasy.

A beautiful story! The author uses her words to capture her audience and bond them with the characters. The style and writing is easy to read but contains complex ideas. Comedy, tragedy, romance, and mythical action all combine into an amazing book. I highly recommend this book!

Cover to cover in one sitting.

In all fairness I'd probably give this 4.5 stars instead of 5 but my other option was 4 and I'm feeling generous. The half star deduction would be for some of the names used. Call me nit picky (I am), they just irritated me.

That negativity out of the way, I'd say overall this was a surprisingly enjoyable read from a first time novelist. The general story and themes are nothing new. Anyone who's progressed beyond Dick and Jane in their literary adventures probably has a pretty good idea of where things are going five minutes in. That's not necessarily a bad thing... Some things are almost universally enjoyable when presented in the right light.

The journey is really what makes a good read and the journey is definitely where this novel shines. Sataniel is petulant in a way that only an immortal with eons to brood can be. I found myself wanting to smack him for behaving like an angsty teenager while simultaneously wanting to lock myself in a room far away from Alex for being such a... well... woman... they are so mysterious and terrifying... Yet I couldn't help but fall for her underlying upbeat nature and genuinely human character while finding plenty of justification for his resentment of her presence.

I don't want to give too much away here... If it wasn't obvious, love or hate I could understand and empathize with the primary characters on a personal level. I found myself attached and unable to let go of knowing their fates and thus unable to set the book down. I read from the moment I picked it up until I was done and while the ending did not leave me with much in the way of unanswered questions, it did leave me hungry for more.

Fortunately I can assume from the subtext containing the word "saga" that the intention is for there to be a sequel or three or perhaps an endless stream of novels featuring the characters or at least the setting of the first. I find myself speculating heavily on where things will go... Something interesting has to occur to justify many sequels, yes? Will there be a massive angelic uprising? Will humanity face a "rapture" of an evolutionary sort a la Childhood's End?

Will Flashdance find itself re-enacted in heaven? Oh come on I cannot be the only one to make the obvious connection between the fact that the main character's name is Alex in Flashdance... She's a dancer... Alex in The Last Seraph... Also a dancer... Alex in Flashdance... Played by a Jennifer (Beals)... Alex in The Last Seraph... Written by a Jennifer (Rehnay)... I could go on and on!

Correlation = Causation.

Anyway, all humor aside this really was a good read and you could do far worse in a new author than giving Ms. Rehnay a go.
