Big change in versions
By wtk
I apparently got edition I, with the waterfall on the cover. Appears to be very different from second edition, so I guess I'm on the hook to buy another one. My mistake, probably, but be aware: There's a big difference, don't get the wrong one. If the prof says second edition, be sure you get second edition.

Nice Trick
By Matt Gatt
This book seems to have gone the tricky way to get you to buy the usually incompatible with your class SI version of the book. True it is cheaper than the "hard cover" but no where on the page, except if you squint and stare at the picture of the book does it mention this is the SI version of the book. The material will be the same but as every engineering student knows that the teachers frequently only use the book itself as reference and the real use of it is the questions at the end of the chapters for homework. This book will allow you to have the fun of finding a friend and changing up all the problems you need. I am sure the book with be the same but overall very annoying being tricked into buying the wrong book. Always nice thing to find out after you start to do your homework assuming you bought the right book because you intentionally stayed away from the SI versions.

Paperback vs. Hardcover
By William D. Rice
You can save at least $40 by going paperback instead of hardcover for this textbook, and the only thing missing from the paperback version is the constants written on the inside cover of the hardcover book. I just had my roommate photocopy the page for me and taped it in my paperback book. Exactly equal textbooks, not so equal price. Paperbacks are the way to go.

I Am #10: Cleopatra, by Grace Norwich

I was the last pharaoh of Egypt. I am Cleopatra.

As the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt, I ruled alone without the help of my husband. I was a powerful and courageous leader, and I passionately loved my people. Difficult topic for young readers
By Acorn
This was used for a class project for my daughter. She struggles with reading sometimes, and I was hoping this book would be easier than the original that we bought. She's 9 and this book was for 7-9. We still had to read most of it to her... but I don't want to harp on that because ancient Egypt isn't the easiest topic and I understand that they did the best they could.

Additionally, the book ends with a reference to her suicide. They are careful to point out that suicide was viewed as honorable back then, but they don't say that today it is not viewed the same way (and shouldn't be). It opened up a healthy conversation with my daughter, and that's OK, but I want other parents to know and be prepared.

Ideal book for a class project. Not highbrow reading material but great for a homework project.
By A. Whitney
I purchased this ffor my daughter's class project. I was looking for something that was light enough for her to carry and with just enough information on the subject. We have a much higher quality reference book on Egyptian history and culture in our home library, so this was just a short term solution. It served its purpose. Not the best quality paper or print, but if you need something for a few days for the school project, this is ideal.

Selling Hitler: Propaganda and the Nazi Brand, by Nicholas O'Shaughnessy

Hitler was one of the few politicians who understood that persuasion was everything, deployed to anchor an entire regime in the confections of imagery, rhetoric and dramaturgy. The Nazis pursued propaganda not just as a tool, an instrument of government, but also as the totality, the raison d'Ăªtre, the medium through which power itself was exercised. Moreover, Nicholas O'Shaughnessy argues, Hitler, not Goebbels, was the prime mover in the propaganda regime of the Third Reich - its editor and first author.

Under the Reich everything was a propaganda medium, a building-block of public consciousness, from typography to communiqués, to architecture, to weapons design. There were groups to initiate rumours and groups to spread graffiti. Everything could be interrogated for its propaganda potential, every surface inscribed with polemical meaning, whether an enemy city's name, an historical epic or the poster on a neighbourhood wall. But Hitler was in no sense an innovator - his ideas were always second-hand. Rather his expertise was as a packager, fashioning from the accumulated mass of icons and ideas, the historic debris, the labyrinths and byways of the German mind, a modern and brilliant political show articulated through deftly managed symbols and rituals. The Reich would have been unthinkable without propaganda - it would not have been the Reich.

Review

"Selling Hitler is a thorough, bitter, and entirely virtuoso performance, ranging fluently over all the various mechanisms by which the Nazi propaganda apparatus attempted to create the idea of a nationalist paradise just out of reach, deliverable only by the new order."--Open Letters Monthly

"A fresh, surprising and important look at a neglected aspect of the history of Nazi Germany."--Jewish Journal

This is a fascinating and sophisticated analysis that answers a baffling question: why and how did Germany allow Hitler to come to power?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
All the people, all the time
By David Wineberg
Hitler started out in PR. He was an army propagandist. When the war was over and he found himself back in civilian life, he joined a small labor party as communications director. He soon ousted the founder and created an incident in Munich that led to a sensational trial. This made him a national politician and celebrity. He devoted two chapters of Mein Kampf to the importance of propaganda. He developed the truck-mounted loudspeaker to publicize speeches and martial music. He was constantly on the radio. He invented quasi-religious ceremonies like the entrance of the flagbearers. The endless repetition of simple and simplistic slogans cemented his party’s control of mindset. He admired the British propaganda machine, claiming it was responsible for victory over Germany in WWI. Under Hitler, Germany became enamored of Madison Avenue, and applied its lessons. Selling Hitler is a master class in brand marketing.

The Nazis controlled all communication. When Hitler made a speech, everyone had to place speakers in the streets so all would hear him. The party bought a film studio and produced newsreels to suit, as well as feature films that reminded viewers of the greatness that was Germany, the traditions and the myths that built a nation. In addition to radio, newspaper, film and public spectacles, Hitler actively spread rumors in whisper campaigns. Like internet “facts” today, Nazi propaganda, repeated constantly, soon became truths. “The idea was not to brainwash, but to show that the great mass of Germans believed” – and so should you. Everyone was to be on message, all the time. It was as high pressure and comprehensive a marketing campaign as was ever implemented.

Symbolism was the default mode of Nazi terminology. Everything was measured for its symbolic possibilities. To the point where roofs had to be pitched because flat roofs were Middle Eastern and therefore Jewish. The word fanatic became the highest term of approval. Absolutely everything was meant to persuade. From architecture to ceremonies, from word choice to myths, from symbols to sounds, everything had to add value to the Nazi brand. Hitler himself rotated the swastika to give it dynamism (moving upwards towards the right). Every public space was an opportunity for a symbolic message, carved in stone, draped in a flag or mounted with a statue.

So when Hitler announced it was Poland that invaded Germany, everyone believed it. There was no other credible source. During the war, the propaganda machine simply attributed German atrocities to the victims, making local Germans the true victims of Polish, British or French horrors. Everyone bought it.

O’Shaughnessy’s book is as thorough and complete as it could possibly be. He examines every aspect of language, custom, dress, myths, media, words, phrases and scapegoats. He acknowledges that Hitler actually invented none of it. All of these tactics have been employed before (and since). But Hitler pulled it all together, and with Goebbels as his tool, implemented ubiquitously.

There is a great deal of space given to Jews as scapegoats, but even Hitler admitted that if there were no Jews, he would have had to invent them. There was actually risk that if he did manage to eliminate all Jews, he would lose mindshare. It was that central to distracting Germans, and he knew it. In an interesting side note, Alexis de Tocqueville warned that idiotic notions of race superiority and social Darwinism would play only too well in Germany. This was the 1850s, when the word Aryan got transferred from the name of a language to the name of a (nonexistent) race. Germans already had a reputation for being suggestible to such myths.

History Repeats Itself
By Thomas F. Murphy
Mr. O'Shaughnessy states his premise in his introduction. Propaganda was the lifeblood pumped from the heart of the National Socialist Workers Party. He then corroborates his position with an exhaustive and admirably documented examination of the strategy and tactics brought to bear in each stage of the Nazi party's existence: birth, coming of age, dominance and death throes.

None of the bogus theories trumpeted by Hitler were original. Everything was borrowed. Attribution was distorted and specious yet all through the early years up to Stalingrad, Hitler and his acolytes were able to convince Germans that what they wanted to believe was what he was giving them. Even after Hitler's suicide, half of the German people believed in him.

Ancient history? Mass rallies, the draw of entertainment, simplicity of language and sloganeering, sky-is-falling rhetoric, press and other media manipulation, rumor and innuendo offered to a part of society that is searching for international respect and vindication, we witness it in our own time. The enemy is at our doorstep. True, the media are more sophisticated, but the elements of propaganda remain the same.

Well done, Mr. O'.

Review

“Throughout my eight years at Crowder College, I’ve tried out different editions of books for various classes, but one book I have not altered is Berk’s Infants and Children. The information continues to strike a balance between breadth and depth, which is not an easy feat.”

Nathan Gandy, Crowder College

“I really enjoyed the read. I didn't catch myself reading the same sentence more than once, like I usually do. The chapter kept me curious and willing to keep reading.”

Student, Arizona State University

“Berk has made teaching and learning about infants and children a joy with her engaging writing style, pulling me and students into the text. Thank you for a great textbook.”

Chance Bell, Florida State University

“I really liked the examples used to describe perceptual development. The explanations given, paired with the descriptions of the experiments used, helped me to understand the information in ways I wouldn't otherwise have be."

Student, University of Alabama Birmingham

“I have enthusiastically used Infants, Children, and Adolescents for over twenty years. Not only does Berk consistently include the most up-to-date research in each edition, but she presents it in a student-focused, engaging manner. As someone who has taught an extraordinarily diverse set of students in my career, I would recommend this text for any student interested in studying the dynamic process of child and adolescent development.”

Michael Hall, SUNY Dutchess

“I really enjoyed the Look and Listen feature embedded in the reading itself. I find that relating information to real-life scenarios helps me not only to recall the information, but also aids in critical-thinking skills.”

Student, Kishwaukee College

“I have been using this author’s texts in several of my developmental courses for the past 15+ years ...[I] can't say enough positive words to describe my experience with her textbooks. My students have even commented on how well written the textbooks are and that they can really relate to the applications.”

— Amy Carrigan-Smith, University of Saint Francis

“I am most impressed with how this edition has been updated with more recent cultural information, and not just in the U.S. I also like that it is even more cross-disciplinary.”

Diane Cook, University of North Georgia

“Berk provides a clear and concise text to introduce topics and make them meaningful to students.”

Kristin Watson, Northwest Mississippi Community College

“Dr. Berk combines superb scholarship, powerful writing, and a keen sense of organization to produce near perfection . . . Students . . . could not ask for a more informative textbook.”

Murray Krantz, Florida State University

“Berk carefully and seamlessly introduces culturally diverse research findings to create a holistic and accurate understanding of development and its many nuances.”

Maggie Renken, Georgia State University

“The research is presented with a great depth of understanding, not watered down or presented superficially, as in many texts, yet is described and structured in a way that helps students construct an overall, personally relevant understanding of development during childhood.”

Joan E. Test, Missouri State University

“I love the way the narrative keeps the reader’s attention and constantly motivates the information. It is not simply a catalog of facts, but a story about how children develop.”

Dara Musher-Eisenman, Bowling Green State University

“No other textbook covering child development does so as thoroughly as Berk’s Infants, Children and Adolescents in terms of research reviewed and incorporated, exemplary photos, and instructor resources.”

Kate Fogarty, University of Florida

“There is excellent coverage of diversity, and delicate but appropriate discussions on apparent differences between various socioeconomic groups and cultures.”

Stuart Marcovitch, University of North Carolina Greensboro

“Instead of reporting cut-and-dry research findings, the chapters also include applied information relevant to everyday lives in different cultures and ethnic statuses. The colorful tables and pictures not only attract attention, but also [offer the] best illustrations.”

Hiu-Chin Hsu, University of Georgia

“I find most valuable the relevance, currency and integration of research throughout the text, with an interesting and entertaining narrative that makes the research results come alive for beginning students in child development.”

Joan E. Test, Missouri State University

“Although I have been teaching Child Development for more than 40 years, I found myself learning new concepts from Dr. Berk’s insightful presentation [with] the best research literature on virtually every topic, excellent organization and sequence, and Dr. Berk’s captivating writing style.”

Murray Krantz, Florida State University

“I am impressed by the “Ask yourself” sections; this is the exact way in which I try to encourage my students to approach the material, and I particularly appreciate the emphasis on evidence-based answers rather than opinions.”

Janet J. Boseovski, University of North Carolina Greensboro

“I was very impressed with the attention to diversity issues.”

Dara Musher-Eisenman, Bowling Green State University

“The text does an excellent job of simplifying complex cognitive phenomena in a way that makes them easy to understand. The text makes clear connections that illustrate how developmental research informs—or can inform—education and child-rearing practices.”

Maggie Renken, Georgia State University

“Empirical studies and their findings are woven into the prose efficiently and with clarity. Classic theories are presented along with more cutting-edge research.”

Sarah Kollat, Pennsylvania State University

“Berk’s books on child development are the quintessential texts for all serious students of child development.”

Dominic Gullo, Drexel University

Fire and Forget: Short Stories from the Long WarFrom Da Capo Press

Fire and Forget includes the title story from Redeployment by Phil Klay, 2014 National Book Award Winner in Fiction
These stories aren't pretty and they aren't for the faint of heart. They are realistic, haunting and shocking. And they are all unforgettable. Television reports, movies, newspapers and blogs about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have offered images of the fighting there. But this collection offers voices—powerful voices, telling the kind of truth that only fiction can offer.

What makes the collection so remarkable is that all of these stories are written by those who were there, or waited for them at home. The anthology, which features a Foreword by National Book Award winner Colum McCann, includes the best voices of the wars’ generation: award-winning author Phil Klay’s “Redeployment;” Brian Turner, whose poem “Hurt Locker” was the movie's inspiration; Colby Buzzell, whose book My War resonates with countless veterans; Siobhan Fallon, whose book You Know When the Men Are Gone echoes the joy and pain of the spouses left behind; Matt Gallagher, whose book Kaboom captures the hilarity and horror of the modern military experience; and ten others.

From Booklist
While the grand, noble causes of the past wars continue to capture our collective imaginations, the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have been treated with greater ambivalence. Fire and Forget, a collection of short stories by authors who are also military veterans (or, in one case, a family member), captures the messiness of soldiering when the mission and endgame are unclear. Though fiction, each work reads true, filled with tension, fear, and anger. Readers are transported to desert checkpoints, ride along with vehicle convoys, and return home from combat to face an uncertain future. Standouts include Andrew Slater’s “New Me,” a sobering glimpse inside the mind of a soldier who has suffered a traumatic brain injury. In “Tips for a Smooth Transition,” Siobhan Fallon, an army wife, quotes from a manual that urges spouses to “set up a security plan” in the event that their husbands experience a vivid flashback. It’s a stark reminder that war, for combatants and their families, never truly ends. Writes Gavin Ford Kovite: “Heads they win, tails you lose.” --Patty Wetli

Review
"Searing stories from the war zones of Afghanistan, Iraq, and the USA by warrior writers. Fire and Forget is about not forgetting. It is a necessary collection, necessary to write, necessary to read." - E.L. Doctorow

"I've been waiting for this book for a decade. I laughed, shouted, and cried while reading this kaleidoscopic collection. So many facets of war and the people who do our fighting are covered here. Fire and Forget is a literary history of this latest period of American wars. It's a profound and telling work of art." - Anthony Swofford

"A diverse anthology on our long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan united by the extraordinary talents of its authors. These stories are exceptional." - Kevin Powers

"A resonant, moving collection of stories from writers who know firsthand about the incongruous beauty and constant tragedy of war." - Nathaniel Fick

"'War stories are almost never about war unless they're told by someone who was never there,' Jacob Siegel writes in the opening story of this superb collection. What's especially valuable here is to be reminded how deeply 'war stories' have penetrated American culture.... From Siobhan Fallon's moving anatomy of what a waiting spouse has to look forward to after her husband's third deployment, to Brian Van Reet's brilliant gloss on Hemingway's 'Big Two-Hearted River,' these stories mark the territory of Return, in a manner both rich and essential." - Anthony Giardina

“Captures the messiness of soldiering when the mission and endgame are unclear. Though fiction, each work reads true, filled with tension, fear, and anger. Readers are transported to desert checkpoints, ride along with vehicle convoys, and return home from combat to face an uncertain future.”

The Guardian (UK), 1/3/13

“The range of stories in Fire and Forget displays a remarkable depth and breadth of the experience of the Iraq war.”

WarOnTerrorNews, 1/3/13
“Like Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, most of these 15 stories are so deceptively crafted that the impact sneaks up on the reader in an unexpected way…It seems like we're preconditioned to expect 700-page epic novels, but a 10-page short story can condense all the emotion down to its core essence. The editors have done a remarkable job at maintaining that discipline…It's a powerful collection; for now, probably the best, most comprehensive—fictional—look at the wars that has been written.”

The Fighting Leprechaun, 1/10/13

“Powerful… These short stories manage to capture the essence of what service members have experienced… There are a lot of essential truths packed into Fire and Forget. For those of us that have been there, or know people who served in these wars, it is important reading."

Acolytes of War, 1/21/13

“Whether portraying the fantastical or the banal, the in-theater tales feature grunts’ eye perspectives on deployment, far from the sterile perspectives recounted in more official histories, memoirs, journalism, and government pronouncements…Hat’s off to all the Fire and Forget authors and editors.”

ForeWord, Spring 2013

“Deeply insightful…The writing is vivid and compelling, artfully selected by the editors…An important book…This collection deserves to be read.”

Internet Review of Books, 1/25/13

“As might be expected, these stories are intense; it's hard to read many of them in a single session. Yet contrary to expectations there's not much sameness in the telling. Each man or woman has his/her own story, each one unique. These are voices we all need to hear.”

East Bay Express, 2/5/13
“[A] remarkable collection…Not for the faint of heart, they are realistic, haunting, shocking, and unforgettable…This collection offers voices—powerful voices, telling the kind of truth that only fiction can offer.”

Joyce Carol Oates, Twitter.com, 2/9/13

“Brilliant intro by Colum McCann. Devastating stories.”

Daily Beast, 2/11/13

“A visceral, all-too-real collection of short stories by veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan…This is fiction as good as any you’ll read anywhere...These pages contain a record of the cost of our excursions abroad that is as illustrative as any culture can produce.”

Barnes and Noble Review, 2/15/13

“These rousing ‘Short Stories of the Long War’ are uniquely resonant.”

War on Terror News, 2/13/13

“Probably the best single representation of Iraq and Afghanistan-fiction that’s currently available. Novels like Fobbit and The Yellow Birds have done their part well—but one author’s voice can only go so far.”

Military Times, 1/6/2014

“You are unlikely to forget this fine fiction by 14 veterans and a veteran’s spouse. Known writers…contribute three of the 15 stories in this collection. Their work is solid but Fire also succeeds because of names the book introduces.”

Penthouse, February 2014

“The 15 works of fiction in this collection are powerful, poignant, and at times painful tales of the truths of war, written by men and women who were there—and one wife who was left behind.”

The Massachusetts Review website, January 2014

“Fire and Forget has lessons we civilians have yet to learn.”

Word & Film, 2/5/15
“Offer[s] diverse experiences of those affected by—and fighting—the Global War on Terror.”

Military Success Network, 2/12/13
“Its pages feature unique but iconic stories of war, homecoming, and the struggle for meaning in both...This collection paints a startling and bleak picture of Long War veterans and their lives during and after combat…That said, the voices of Fire and Forget ring true in their cynicism, pain, and humor. This is an important collection of fiction, not only because of its current-day relevancy, but also because of the strength of its diverse voices, all engaged in a search for truth among the desert sands of fiction and memory. It should not be missed by anyone with an interest in modern war or the veteran experience.”

Literary Aficionado, 2/22/13
“Penetrating stories from the hands of the damaged who have scribed the tensions, and anguish, the scars, the decimation of personal lives of those who returned home either physically maimed or mentally brutalized or both…These stories are so well edited that there is a variety of types of tales—some humorous, some that show that intense camaraderie that often peaks in a war zone, some about those left behind when the soldiers were fragged to distant lands…Some tattoo on the mind.”

New City, 2/26
“Nothing brings the reality of war home like hearing it from the hearts and minds of those who experienced it…Fire and Forget arrives at just the right time, when the last vestiges of conflict fall away…Roy Scranton and Matt Gallagher have not only compiled an excellent diversity of experiences and vantage points into the war, but also a list of accomplished and gifted writers…The stories are by turns gritty and hilarious, poignant and rhapsodic, but there’s one thing they all share: they are all imbued with the deep love of their authors. Faced with something as unspeakably harrowing as war, the voices here have salvaged what small beauty they could from the turmoil…At no point is this an easy collection, but it is a necessary one.”

Roanoke Times, 3/1
“Gritty with realism…The tales are exceedingly well told. Fiction it may be, but none can deny the ring of truth.”

Bookviews, 2/22
“Anyone who served and anyone who wants to know what it was to serve will value this book.”

Library Journal, 3/15/13
“With wars come war stories and from those stories evolves literature. Leading this generation of war literature is this collection of short stories written by soldiers and a military spouse whose lives were directly affected by the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan…The encompassing and humanistic tone is the heart of this work…The honesty and authenticity of the stories are universal…Like Walter Dean Myers’s Sunrise Over Fallujah, these tales will appeal to readers of war and historical fiction.”

New York Daily News, 3/5/13
“Some of America’s greatest works of literature have come from its wars. Be it Stephen Crane, E.L. Among the finest have been enlisted in Fire and Forget…Fire and Forget will not soon be forgotten.”

Not a Fun Read, But an Essential One
By David Hall
"Fire and Forget" is a powerful, depressing, and unsettling collection of short stories. These stories were written by veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, and while they are fiction, I have no doubt that most if not all are based on real experiences.

"Depressing" is an adjective I rarely use to describe fiction. In this case, it comes with the territory, because so much of what occurred over there or upon return was/is terribly depressing. These short stories manage to capture the essence of what many service members have experienced, but for the most part it's doesn't make for comfortable reading.

Some of the stories are downright sad. "Play the Game", by Colby Buzzell effectively transmits the mixed emotions one combat vet experiences, turning his brain into an organic "Wheel of Fortune" as he wanders around in a fog on the streets of Los Angeles. "New Me" by Andrew Slater manages to describe how traumatic brain injury created a slippery slope between normalcy and borderline dementia for one returning soldier, while his friends and family remain earnestly clueless.
Mariette Kalinowski's gut-punching story, "The Train", perhaps affected me the most of all. I've experienced "survivor's guilt" myself, and Ms. Kalinowski's portrayal of how that plays out really rang true. As an added bonus, if there are any Americans who still possess the mistaken belief that women haven't been serving in combat, they need to read "The Train" to assist them in pulling their heads out of their rear ends. On the flip side, "Tips for a Smooth Transition" by Siobhan Fallon really nailed the equally-difficult challenges faced by spouses during and after deployments.

Finally, I need to say something about what was for me the most disturbing piece of this collection: "Bugs Don't Bleed", by Matt Gallagher. Having read Gallagher's superb non-fiction account of his tour in Iraq, "Kaboom", I expected something similar from him here. I was way wrong. His portrait of "Will", a tank crewman, illustrates something that the best writers of war fiction deeply understand: Serving in a combat zone really screws up soldiers, although in varying degrees. Those who participate in direct combat operations are affected differently than those who support the folks who do the fighting, but the crazy s*** that we see and do changes us forever. I've known a number of soldiers similar to "Will", who appear physically normal (whatever that is), but have their wiring re-connected in a slightly different pattern. That's what disturbed me the most about this story. There are an awful lot of men and women similar to "Will" among us, and many of them aren't getting the help that they need. While the concept of the "broken combat veteran" is surfacing in the media and popular culture, solutions seem to be a long way off.

There are a lot of essential truths packed into "Fire and Forget". For those of us that have been there, or know people who served in these wars, it is important reading. It is even more important for those of you who haven't got this connection to begin to grasp the powerful and long-term effects on your sons, daughters, brothers and sisters, or that guy you went to high school with. You may not enjoy "Fire and Forget", but you will definitely remember it.

(Reviewer Background: I am a former Armor/Cavalry Officer, and retired civilian law enforcement officer. I returned to the Army Reserve in 2008 as a Special Agent in Army Criminal Investigations Division, aka CID, and served one tour in Iraq from 2009-2010. I'm currently serving on active duty as a CID agent.)

Hard Stories about a Hard World
By not a natural
Fire and Forget contains some of the most gripping and powerful short stories I have ever read. Inevitably, with fifteen different authors, the quality of the stories is a bit uneven, ranging from genuinely good to simply brilliant. Still, there are none not worth reading.

There is a shopworn admonition that writers should write about what they know best. In most cases, this advice is of no more value than any other abstract cliche'. However, readers of Phil Klay's story "Redeployment" will see this tired old bromide brought to life in a technically learned but overwhelmingly sad fashion. Anyone who doubts that military training is thoroughly absorbed in a way that makes it directly applicable in a broad, varied, and unexpected set of circumstances, need only read this story, especially the last few pages. I can't recall sitting alone reading something so moving that I winced and involuntarily turned away, not until I read the matter-of-fact account of love and mercy in "Redeployment."

Mariette Kalinowski's story "The Train" was even more effective and rightly troubling. I don't read fiction as a detached observer. I try to put myself in the place of the characters, especially the protagonist, and that's the way I tried to read "The Train." Maybe it was my moody discomfort at that moment or transitory fatigue, but as I got more deeply into Malinowski's story, I found myself identifying much too closely with the protagonist. I found myself feeling as if I were actually living her life, or at least the piece of it included in "The Train." It was unnerving. I had to back off, reminding myself that this was just an unusually well-crafted fictional account, and I was just a reader. I've never before had to distance myself from something I was reading, feeling as if I were being absorbed into it.

Perry O'Brien's "Poughkeepsie" gives us a painfully ingenious 21st Century variation on the infamous "Dear, John ..." letter. O'Brien's story adds injury to injury with its offhanded indifference to those trying to make do in the most stressful circumstances. After all, life is not a game in which losing is of no consequence. Still, the question "What would you do if you came here?" might be put to any veteran of the Second Gulf War. However they got involved, it was a set-up, one for which they paid a price, as we see so clearly in Poughkeepsie.

All fifteen stories in Fire and Forget are worthy of the attention I've given to "Redeployment," "The Train," and Poughkeepsie." These are just the ones I found especially interesting. All the stories provide insights and information that, to my knowledge, are to be found nowhere else, certainly not in contemporary literature. The worst you can say about any of the authors' efforts is that they sometimes tried a bit too hard to write like authors, briefly losing touch with the reality of being a soldier, marine, or anguished loved one.

Nevertheless, all of them have mastered the art of judicious understatement, and none yields to the temptation to be histrionically pathetic or super-heroically upbeat. The stories take a toll on the reader, but it's the toll of truth. When all is said and done, we might ask ourselves just how much control we have over our lives.

EXCELLENT! A landmark collection of stories from the wars
By Timothy J. Bazzett
FIRE AND FORGET is an absolutely terrific collection of stories by fifteen exciting new writers, all products of the recent and current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Fully a third of the writers have already published their own books. Siobhan Fallon's book of connected stories, You Know When the Men Are Gone, has alreay garnered much deserved critical acclaim. Her story, "Tips for a Smooth Transition" adds a valuable chapter to her earlier oeuvre of the unavoidable miscommunication, disconnect, and struggles with loneliness and infidelity that occur between absent or returning soldiers and their spouses, left behind either alone or with small children.

It's hard to pick a favorite entry here, but I loved Phil Klay's "Redeployment," maybe because of its dialogue of authentic GI language filled with all its political incorrectness which nevertheless brought guilty guffaws from me as I read it. I'd offer an example, but it's too filthy for most of my review venues. And yet the same story, with the narrator's fear of public places and the dilemma of dealing with a dying and beloved dog made me wince in empathy. Jacob Siegel's "Smile, There Are IEDs Everywhere" shows three veterans of widely divergent backgrounds reuniting in New York City for a drunken binge. The difficulties of that "smooth transition" are glaringly displayed in the course of that evening.

In "Play the Game" Colby Buzzell (author of the memoir, My War: Killing Time in Iraq) offers a chilling portrait of a futureless veteran who is probably suffering from PTSD, living in a transient LA hotel, drifting aimlessly between dead end jobs. Roman Skaskiw's "Television" presents a well-meaning but naive young lieutenant who has yet to learn that war is about more than just the killing portrayed in video games.

Gavin Ford Kovite's story, "When Engaging Targets, Remember," gives us a thinking, college-educated soldier who fears he may think too long about the Rules of Engagement he has been given, thus endangering his own life and those of his fellow combatants. Then there is "The Train," Mariette Kalinowski's story of a female vet who obsessively rides the subways after having watched her best friend killed in front of her by a suicide bomber. Who says there are no women in combat?

"New Me" by Andrew Slater, and Brian Van Reet's "Big Two-Hearted Hunting Creek" both deal with veterans who have been mutilated, traumatized and damaged who are trying to find their places in an apathetic civilian society. "Roll Call," by David Abrams (author of the novel, Fobbit), is the shortest and yet perhaps one of the most affecting of all the stories in the collection because of its subject: a unit memorial service for a fallen comrade. Like Phil Klay, Abrams has mastered the obscene, often hilarious, jargon of the enlisted man. Perry O'Brien's "Poughkeepsie" gives us the poignant plight of a lonely soldier who has gone AWOL to find a pen-pal who, he learns too late, wants nothing to do with him.

Ted Janis's "Raid" shows most effectively how too many combat tours can burn a man out, while Brian Turner (author of the poetry collection, Here, Bullet) offers a dream-like look at a patrol lost in seemingly endless desert dunes in "The Wave that Takes Them Under."

The final two pieces in the book are by its two main editors. Matt Gallagher (author of the memoir, Kaboom: Embracing the Suck in a Savage Little War), in "And Bugs Don't Bleed" paints an effective mini-portrait of a burned-out, deeply damaged vet, faithless women and greedy, predatory civilians who claim to support the troops. But as one character says, those troops "have been completely abandoned by the rest of the country." Roy Scranton's "Red Steel India" (an excerpt from his as yet unpublished novel, WAR PORN) shows the boredom and monotony of perimeter guard duty and the distrust and petty cruelties the soldiers show toward their Iraqi counterparts. (The tone of Scranton's story brought to mind Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya's fine novel of the Afghanistan war, The Watch: A Novel.)

I know I can't even begin to do justice to the excellence and variety of the veterans' experiences brought together between the covers of FIRE AND FORGET. So I'll just say this. There is not a clinker in the bunch. Every story deserves its place in this landmark collection. I will remember these names and will be watching for them.
