Invariably, however, these advances have been followed by concerted efforts to restore white privilege.

Adams and Sanders trace what they see as the "continuous arc of animosity" between blacks and whites in the United States, contextualizing and shedding light on the racism that that they find persists in the "dark recesses of the nation's heart." Adams, an independent scholar, and Sanders, a professor of English and the History of Ideas at Pitzer College, find obvious malignity in the constitutional debate among the founders over whether slaves should be counted as people or property, while Thomas Jefferson, in their view, was a rapist as well as a racist, since Sally Hemmings was 14 at the time of their first relations. The American colonization movement that led to the founding of Liberia was, for Adams and Sanders, a "draconian" plot hatched by whites of the American Colonization Society to rid the country of blacks. (While the concept did originate with ACS, well-regarded studies show strong support, culminating in Garveyism, for emigration among blacks.) Throughout, White America is painted in varying shades of bigotry, with crusaders like William Lloyd Garrison cast as stark exceptions. Scant attention is paid to the remarkable struggles of the freedmen during Reconstruction to build political power for blacks in the south; the Nation of Islam and the Black Panthers emerge as sources of resistance. Often, the hard truth at the core of the authors' critique is obscured by totalizations on the order of White America Thinks This, Black America Thinks That: "most whites perceive blacks as equals, but fully culpable for their economic and social ills," while at the same time, despite an increasing number of elite and moneyed black citizens, "most blacks understand that though they live in the same nation as whites, they do not live within the same system." The sociological data needed to buttress such assertions is decidedly missing here; Adams and Sanders cite, repeatedly, a small number of secondary sources. That slavery was wrong and that America's treatment of its black citizens has been appalling should be obvious to readers; Winthrop Jordan, Cornel West and others, including those the authors cite, have produced far more innovative works on the same subject.

Adams and Sanders explore the dichotomy between our nation's expressed ideals and the denial of black rights in this fascinating look at American domestic policy from the 1600s to the present. The authors contend that intentional suppression of the rights of blacks for the economic benefit of whites remains central in American history and precludes sincere efforts to achieve racial justice. Yet, they point out, racism as we know it was not preordained; many of the chartered Africans in America were indentured servants, with rights similar to those of indentured whites, rights that early freed slaves and freedmen also exercised. However, from the Constitutional Convention until the present, the suppression of the rights of blacks with a corresponding denial of that suppression has been the norm. From unpaid slave labor through Jim Crow, the peonage system, and formal and informal segregation, through current conditions of economic underprivilege, black rights have been sacrificed for the economic well-being of white citizens. Proof the world is not as it appears.

This is how things work. People have no idea how easy it is to take control of a poor illiterate 3rd world country. Not many people out there truly appreciate how things really get done and how small the world and people in it are. Invariably you end up knowing some of the same players in a political take down. Brings back old stories and adventures. The only way to survive is to have a great sense of humor and personal destiny when great plans go south.

Warning! To all readers who have waited for this side to be told be prepared to be disappointed.
First, not sure why so many names, places, and simple facts had to be changed when many parts of this story has been told in detail before by Eeben Barlow, Jim Hooper and Al J. Venter. A specific example is the misrepresentation of the Battle of Soyo, Angola. This altering just adds to the confusion and is only compounded by the exclusion of an index.
Second, this book reads like Tom Clancy fiction with one character being at the center of all the important decisions and events. When compared to other sources some events appeared manufactured just to inject the author into the fight.

I know this guyy

I was in the '97 Peking to Paris rally with Mann and his friend. We concluded he was some sort of hired gun, but I had no idea. I don't know how accurate his version is, but it is a gripping story. For what it is worth, he drove an Aston DB4 in the Rally. We couldn't imagine how such a car could survive the brutal roads, but Simon, his friend and the car did so.

There is no homework. No tests. No SATS. You're just there to learn because the human brain isn't fully formed until you're 24.

Walker Callaghan has just arrived at the Academy after a tragic car accident. “Is this heaven or is this high school?” she asks.

She finds out her new life is a bit of both as she falls in love with tat-covered, bad boy Daniel Reid who is about to break the only sacred rule of this place. He's looking for a portal to return back to the living realm.

He needs just one hour to retrieve his younger brother who strangely never arrived at The Academy. Bobby is an Earth Bound Spirit, stuck at a plane crash site that took both of their lives as their rich father piloted his private jet nose-first into a cornfield on Christmas Eve.

Walker loves Daniel and risks it all to go with him.

Have they learned enough to outsmart dangerous forces while transporting a young child with them? Can their love survive the fragmented evil parts of themselves that are now hunting them down as they try to find a way back to the middle?

Unique plot with great characters!

INITIAL THOUGHTS

I saw the cover and was immediately intrigued. It’s mysterious and creepy. I love it. Then I read on the bottom of the cover: “High school for the recently departed.” I was hooked. I have definitely never read anything about high schools for dead kids. I had to read this. Plus, it looks like a bit of a romance. Count me in!

WHAT I LIKED

The romance. Walker and Daniel. I absolutely loved their relationship. It starts out rocky because Daniel clearly likes to be left alone and doesn’t want anything to do with Walker. But Walker is persistent, and they end up being sort of friends, which eventually turns into something more. I love the gradual growth of their relationship. I love that he slowly lets her in. I love that they need each other, even when they don’t realize it. I just LOVED them. And I want to see more!

Unique plot. First you got the main part of the story: everyone at this school is dead, and they’re caught in between, like a limbo-sort-of place. Then, you have Walker, who meets Daniel, who is trying to get back to life to save his younger brother. Awesome. Love, love, loved it. It’s probably the happiest I’ve ever been to read about dead people. This is so unlike anything I have ever read, so I was on the edge of my seat.

The family bonds. This had me feeling all the feels. Walker’s relationship with her mom. Daniel’s relationship with his siblings. It was all so heartbreakingly wonderful. In a world where there could be so much heartache and sadness, the love that these people have for each other is incredible. Sorry, I don’t mean to get all sappy, but it got to me. C.L. Gaber did an awesome job.

The deceased celebrities! Ahh! Can you imagine going to a school where Kurt Cobain is your music teacher, Heath Ledger is your drama teacher, and Walter Payton is your coach?! Being dead may not be so bad after all! Of course, it got me a little teary-eyed reading about all of them, especially Heath. He was one of my favorite actors, and his death still gets to me. But, it was really nice to see him and the rest as characters in this book. Plus, it was done so well. I loved it.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE

Hmm. I didn’t give this book 5 hearts because there was just something that bugged me, and I just can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it was the high school stereotypes or the constant references to a particular character’s weight or everyone making fun of Walker’s name (which got old). These were all very minor issues and did not ruin the book for me, but I guess it kept me from feeling that “OMG” feeling.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Really good book! I want more. Like right now. It ended perfectly, but there was also a bit of a cliffhanger, and I just HAVE to know more. I’m so curious as to where this story is going to go. And now that I have heard that there are two more books in the series, I’m so upset that I have to wait, but at the same time, I’m ecstatic that I get to read more about these awesome people! I will be impatiently waiting for books 2 and 3!!!
