Excellent book all in all

This book is for basis practitioners who have some knowledge of the subject.In SAP space there is a huge challenge in terms of the volume of reading material or very expensive training/labs and years of hands on experience before one comprehends and fully learns the subject material and gains mastery. The author understands all this and has done a wonderful job of writing this book .What i love about this book is it gets to the point in a no nonsense approach and a given topic can be read chapterwise in one sitting.Also the material is for practiotioners with enough depth to do your job very well and still go beyond your comfort zone and gain practical wisdom related to the topic.The references provided are excellent and the subject matter is distilled and condensed to make it useful.Also the guidance provided for certification and career path advice is awesome. The book delivers what it promises and much more .

All in all i love this book and am sure to refer/use it many many times in my job.I recommend getting the kindle version as its handy with many interfaces to read anywhere. The only thing i wish the author had covered was covering multiple databases and felt the focus was on oracle.If the sap tools for DB2,maxdb,HANA,SQL server and other databases were discussed in a seperate chapter it would have been a welcome addition.Also a addendum on emerging trends and references to learn the emerging technologies like cloud computing,HANA etc would be great.However i understand this is a handbook and not a encyclopedia :).

Precise and Concise Book

This book is really an on job hand book for any SAP BASIS consultant who needs to refer to any particular issue during his work. It covers the SAP engine and architecture in detail with examples and real screenshots.

ABAP or Portal developers who need to understand the basics of SAP Administration can really be benefited.
And SAP Admin cousultants could get more information on the actual concepts and working of the internal systems.

I have been doing both development and Admin work in SAP for a while and I still found the book useful.

I would definitely recommend taking a look at the book or kindle version.

Author has done a good job in describing basis typical day to day job and takes you in depth into all aspects of basis administration which include ABAP as as well Java. The screen shots of the installation, configuration and various aspects of basis admin was really good. I would recommend this book.

Part II looks at modes of discourse, showing for example how discourse relations create implicatures and how Indirect Discourse differs from Free Indirect Discourse. The studies conclude that the relations between sentences that make a discourse coherent are already encoded in sentence grammar and that, once established, these relations influence the meaning of individual sentences.

Jacqueline Gueron is Emeritus Professor at the Universite Paris 3. She holds a Ph.D in French Literature from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorat d'Etat from the Universite Paris 7. She has co-edited a number of works on subjects dealing with syntax and construal, most recently on tense, modality, and Creole syntax. She is co-author, with Liliane Haegeman, of English Grammar: A Generative Perspective (Wiley-Blackwell 1999), and, with Jacqueline Lecarme, of Time and Modality (Springer, 2008). Her publications are devoted to sentence grammar - extraposition, focus, anaphora, inalienable possession, tense, aspect, and modality - as well as to language and literature, including literary criticism, metrical theory and Free Indirect Discourse.

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE...

Now wait a minute. This plot sounds familar.
A young, handsome man connects with a reclusive actress, whose only employee is a butler. He moves into the garage apartment of her large mansion and enjoys her other gifts and favors. He drives her to a major movie studio in a large and expensive car after the studio calls repeatedly not to schedule a comeback but to rent the car!
It's co-writer and director Billy Wilder's 1950 black and white film, "Sunset Boulevard."

No, it's LONDON BOULEVARD, the 200l novel by Ken Bruen, the fantastic Hiburnian noir writer.

As the dust jacket declares, Mitchell, Bruen's protagonist, has just been released from prison (three years for aggravated assault) and doesn't want to return to a life of crime. He finds employment as a handyman for stage actress, Lillian Palmer, whose sole other employee is an aging and devoted butler.

The dialogue is witty; the prose is sparse and succinct. Bruen uses a quirky three-line device to catch the reader's attention. Usually the lines are three adjectives but can be titles of books on a shelf or items on a cafe menu.

And the book is funny. Mitchell's sister Briony is slightly mad, a confirmed shoplifter, and forgets her husband is dead. She arrives at Mitch's Welcome Home party "looking like a radiant bag lady" and apologizes for Frank's absence. The lunch at Browns at Convent Gardens with the mob boss is funny, too. Mr. Gant wants Mitch to help him organize his debt collections and to steal Lillian's Silver Ghost Rolls-Royce. The funeral of Joe, Mitch's favorite newspaper seller, is out of control. Mitch throws a copy of "Big Issue" on the lowering coffin and Briony invites a street musician dressed in kilts to play the bagpipes.

Does Colin Ferrill (Mitchell) end up dead in the swimming pool as William Holden (Joe Gillis) does? Well, you'll have to read the book. But I can tell you if he's dead, the butler probably did it!

Links Noir to the Irish Concept of Sadness

It is a long way from the sun-baked streets of Los Angeles to the damp and foggy streets of London. But in this American reprint of Ken Bruen's 2001 work, the author successfully bridges the gap by reworking the 1950 film Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder's classic noir tale of desperation and death.

For the book to live up to the Billy Wilder film noir is a very tall order indeed, but Bruen, the prolific writer from Galway, Ireland, has earned his place at the top of the list of a new generation of writers, including Megan Abbott, Jason Starr and Charles Ardai, all of whom have revitalized noir fiction and dragged it --- often bleeding --- into the new century. And that has meant great reading for the rest of us.

Whether set in Ireland in the Jack Taylor series or in London with the Inspector Brant series, Bruen often pays homage in his books to the American masters of the genre, such as Charles Willeford, Ed McBain and Lawrence Block. So it is no surprise that he follows closely the Wilder tale in LONDON BOULEVARD --- even down to the creepy butler. But instead of a chimp being buried in the backyard, it will be far worse.

Mitchell gets out of jail after serving three years for a violent assault he has no memory of, although it is not hard to see how he might have done the crime. On the ride home from prison, he gets out of the car and busts the arm of a squeegee man. But he has a job waiting and is given a great apartment thanks to his best friend. For this, he is expected to do muscle work for a loan shark. Then there is his old crew of bank robbers who want to bring him back for one more job.

Bruen puts us right from the start in the world of noir: "I had dark eyes, and not just on the outside," Mitchell says early on. But he wants nothing to do with his former life of crime and, on a recommendation, visits the mansion of a once famous London theater star in need of a handyman. He takes the legit job and soon is involved with the old actress.

What follows are double and triple crosses that keep the pages quickly turning. And Bruen's take on the ending is --- if such a thing is possible --- even darker than Sunset Boulevard. As in the movie, Mitchell meets a girl he immediately falls in love with and wants to protect her from his dark world. Bruen writes, "She was attractive no doubt, but I (Mitchell) hesitated. She said, `There is a lovely word in Irish, it's bronach...means sadness but a lot more. Anyway, that is how you looked.'"

And Mitchell is in a world of sadness. It's interesting that the character of the writer in Wilder's classic should be transformed into a small-time criminal in Bruen's update. But I don't think Bruen is trying to insult those of us who try to scribble for a living, nor is he making a larger, perhaps well-deserved point about the publishing business. He is quite right and unique, however, in linking noir to the Irish concept of sadness. Noir might have been born in sunny America, but its roots are as deep as all human suffering and failure. Bruen writes, "What you regard as a small isolated incident sets off a chain of events you could never have anticipated. You believe you're making choices and all you are doing is slotting in the pieces of the foreordained conclusion."

This deep, melancholic passage serves two purposes: it exemplifies the dark nature of the book, and it highlights how great of a writer Bruen is. His fantastic work is slated to become a movie starring Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley. While it might not end up being another Sunset Boulevard on the big screen, Farrell might be an inspired choice to play Mitchell in LONDON BOULEVARD. Read the book before you see the movie.

Minutes before Mitchell is to be freed after spending three years in prison for an assault he did not remember committing due to a drunken haze, the warden tells the fortyish convict he will be back. Mitchell hides the terminator retort and steps outside knowing he looks like a shifty felon. Working for loan shark Tommy Logan, Billy Norton arrives to pick him up, but Mitchell wonders if this acquaintance can be considered a friend though he is there to take him home.

Logan has plans for Mitchell, but the ex con does not have a compulsive need for quick money and is obsessed with not being a recidivism statistic. Mitchell obtains a handyman position at the Holland Park estate of aging movie actress, Lillian Palmer. As he struggles with adjusting to her odd butler Jordan, those close to him begin to die from an unknown adversary who soon threatens his beloved but insane sister Briony and others like Aisling and even a dog. Mitchell's obsession about staying out of jail has turned compulsive but no one hurts Briony.

With plenty of dark humor throughout, Ken Bruen pays violent homage to Sunset Boulevard with this fast-paced Noir. Each of the key cast members contains differing personalities, but the story line belongs to the anti-hero who just wants to go straight yet finds himself swimming in a foggy sea of sordid sleaze as those good citizens are as nasty as the those he met behind bars and rival those muscles working for Logan. With more blood spilled than a downtown Emergency Room like Atlanta's Grady, fans who don't mind hearing the breaking of bones will want to read Mr. Bruen's gloomy view of London.

I was fortunate to receive a copy of my friend and Kung Fu brother Ron Wheeler’s book. As stated, Ron takes the reader/student from the beginner to intermediate levels of the Jow Ga system. The most outstanding benefit of this book for the Jow Ga student or would be student is that Ron has impeccable form which is mandatory if one is to learn the system properly. Of course, there is no substitute for face to face learning with a qualified Sifu/teacher , however, this book, the way it is laid out in a step by step fashion, provides the student with a complete education on the forms, the techniques and also the application of this well balanced Kung Fu system. Whether you are a beginner who has not decided on a style, a more advanced Kung Fu student or teacher, you will find this book to be a helpful guide and reliable reference. Ron’s accomplishments and the many accolades that have graced his martial arts career did not come without tremendous sacrifice and dedication to Jow Ga. This book is packed with step by step wonderful pictorials, thorough and complete instruction and commentary, making this a must have essential reference piece on the Jow Ga system of Kung Fu. I really like and highly recommend this book.

Upon receiving the Dynamic Power of Southern Shaolin Kung Fu: Beginner to Intermediate Jow Ga Kung Fu book, I was extremely pleased with the outline of the book. As a novice of martial arts, it was refreshing to read a book that speaks to multiple audiences, not only serving as an individual guide, but a high quality book for those building a collection of martial arts literature.

The book overall is well made and better in style than most instructional guides I’ve seen in the past. It’s clear that extensive detail was given to each section and the outline was well thought-out. For a beginner interested in various types of martial arts, this book offered insight to the craft of Jow Ga and provided striking imagery with each pose captured.

For any martial arts student, this is appreciated, as you want to follow each step with clear instruction and a corresponding image.
The reader will also note how accurate the poses are, which is key in the learning development. As I read through the book, it was clear that the details of each style were being explained by a master of skill. Ron’s experience is echoed throughout the book and it leaves you engaged and excited. This is definitely the book to get for anyone interested in Jow Ga and would be a great gift to share. Many congratulations Ron on a well-crafted work of art!

Must have for PV engineers and PEs

Good layout. Easier to use than Sec VIII. I carry it into the field and refer to it 10x as much as Sec VIII. The non-code stuff is also nice and handy (pipe charts, stiffener sizing, square tanks). I would recommend over any other PV book I have seen in the last 10 years.

This book is filled with best practices, handy tables, and formulas all compiled in an way that makes finding what you need easy and efficient. This book is great for both beginning vessel designers and those that have been at it for a while. Highly recommended.

The Best Novel of 2015 -- Hands Down!

From the first page, you will be swept away by this stunning portrayal of a marriage in crisis. Like a spark that grows into a conflagration, Jess's unease about her husband Chet's behavior and words flares into flames of pain and shock as she forces herself to admit the unthinkable.

In the midst of this turmoil, Haley, their teenage daughter, is also fighting to understand herself and her place in her family and the world. Upon learning of her father's selfish betrayals, she runs away and into grave danger. Both mother and daughter abhor conflict and can't find the inner strength to stand up and speak out for what they need and the outrage they feel. But the time has come to stand and face the fire.

Jessica is so much like many women. She loves Chet. She honors her marriage and family. She doesn't want to rock the boat. But what do you do when your boat's been capsized? Jessica has tough decisions to make that will impact not only her but her daughter.

This novel is beautiful. Set in the Yosemite area, the story has layers of symbolism and metaphor. California is on fire, and while fire destroys, it also burns the underbrush to ash so that new life can sprout. Ginny Yttrup parallels the outer and interior dangers--dangers of being scorched and burned. Her characters are thrown into the crucible and face a fire that might destroy them as the landscape around them burns.

If you read only one novel this season, make it Flames.You won't avoid being scorched yourself, but you will be glad for it. There is victory and healing at the end of the journey.

Ginny Yttrup’s latest novel, Flames, deals with a tender subject, the complexities of life – seen from multiple angles and multiples generations, as the flames of infidelity burn through a family. Jessica Weaver is a fire archaeologist who preserves the effects of wildfire on all areas of life. When infidelity blazes through her family, she is forced to take a close look at the motivations of her own life choices and examine the steps that brought her to this defining moment.

The desire to preserve her family unscathed is thwarted when her teenage daughter, Haley, also discovers her father’s infidelity. She chooses to run from the problem, creating another layer of firestorm that overlies the circumstances facing her parents.

While Haley flees to the wilderness, Jessica flees to her father, and Ted, becomes the lens through which we view the perspective of the parent who shepherds and supports his daughter through a trial not unlike one he walked through in his own marriage decades earlier. The faith and grace displayed through Ted and his wife Cretia, is a poignant reflection of God’s grace and mercy to His children no matter what trial they are facing.

This is Ginny Yttrup’s first self-published novel, and it was written from a heart’s desire to help people take a long hard look at the destructive consequences of careless choices. But, more than that, it is a novel that walks through the scorched earth of the heart and finds hope and healing through the searing flames of infidelity.

The words are rich, and carefully woven together so the reader is able to feel the pain, the terror, the hopelessness and the strength that is born out of such a trial. I’ve walked this journey in my own life, and I’ll confess there were times I just snot-sobbed over my book and had to lay it down and physically grieve through the pain of my own life circumstances. But, once on the other side of this novel, I felt stronger and more purposeful about my future than I’ve felt in years! SUCH HEALING was found in the pages of this novel for me!! This is a story birthed in love, and I am certain many lives will be saved and changed through reading this novel!

Good Story, but Frustrating to Read

"Flames" by Ginny L. Ytrrup

Okay, I confess, ...I've liked Ginny Ytrrup ever since I read "Words". I became a huge fan and devoured her novels as soon as I could. I enjoyed "Invisible", too, but not as much as "Words". Still.... For all that devotion, you'll notice that I only gave this novel 4-stars. I had thoughts of rating it only 3-stars. Why?

Ginny Ytrrup seems to be hung up on writing in the first-person. And worse, she has several characters narrating their own parts of the story. Several characters, writing in the first-person, in various parts of the story, makes the story difficult for an easy, enjoyable experience. A first-person account, from only one perspective, is okay, though I'm not a big fan. But from three or more characters? Yes, I followed the story, but it was frustrating. Because of the switch of which-person-narrative, the story didn't flow well as it should have.

"Flames" ultimately was a good, entertaining novel. But while reading it, there was a underlying frustration, a nagging feeling, that I did not overly enjoy. If you can read first-person narratives, from several differing points of view, you might enjoy it. I hope you do. I want the author to be encouraged to continue to write. But I also hope she reads this review and understands my objections to the narrative style.

The Best book on the subject

This is not the book a person would buy at the pet shop along with his or her first boa, and that's a shame, because this book should be mandatory prior reading for anyone who thinks they might want to own a Boa Constrictor.

Vin Russo has generated exactly what the subtitle claims, "A Comprehensive Guide to Care, Breeding, and the Geographic Races" of boa constrictors. This is in the truest sense a reference book, one to which you will return again and again to answer questions on genetics, breeding, geographic distributions, identification and that all important question; what locale must next be represented in my collection?

The first thing I noticed when I received my copy was it's heavy weight for a book of its size. This book is beautifully bound and contains 280 high gloss pages that are riddled with hundreds of great color photos (many of which are contributed by prominent figures in the herpetological community).

As soon as I began to read chapter one, I realized that this book was going to provide its readers with an education. Beginning with taxonomy and nomenclature, Vin Russo explains the history and importance of understanding how these snakes have been classified and provides a great explanation of scale counting; both how to, and the value of counting for identifying subspecies.

The chapter on genetics is worth the purchase price of the book. He explains the terms and their significance in such a way that he leaves no reader behind, yet writes with a sophistication that will end anyone's days of Punnet square shame on their favorite boa forum. If you are interested in morphs and breeding, this is a must read.

The section on basic care is a sound exposition on all the information a newer keeper needs to know to provide adequate care for a boa. Similarly, the sections on breeding and illnesses and injuries, are very good, yet plow little new ground (perhaps because there is little new ground to plow).

Russo firmly cements his place as a go-to resource for serious keepers with the second section of the book, in which he describes (in detail) "all the recognized subspecies, geographic races, and localities of the boa constrictor, including color and pattern morphs and anomalies."

He begins with Boa Constrictor Imperator and moves through its range, country by country, from north to south, describing the habitats and habits of each locality, paying special attention to variations in size and appearance, breeding peculiarities, and threats to a particular locale. A helpful item is the inclusion of known importation data on some of the more rare locales. Russo includes the actual Cites documents in several cases, showing the limited shipments from certain places, helping to understand why the "Panamanians" at the pet store are almost certainly farmed Nicaraguans, etc.

In this section, the localities as the points of origin of many of the popular morphs are detailed, and the section on Colombians is sure to be a morph lover's favorite.

Vin treats B. C. Constrictor in a separate section, where his love of true red-tails and his years of experience with them are evidenced. His treatment of transitional forms in areas of probable inter-graded breeding is very helpful (both with BCI and BCC) in understanding why some boas are simply inter-grades where territories over lap, and other insular forms are separate subspecies.

Along with the factual data conveyed, Russo passionately pleads for responsibility among keepers and breeders, especially in regard to maintaining purity among Boas of known localities. As someone who has visited much of the range of these snakes, Russo has concluded that deforestation and other types of habitat encroachment could very well result in the herpetological hobby becoming a De facto Noah's Ark for some localities, and there may come a day when captive born boas from your locality-based collection are reintroduced to their native lands to repopulate them. Of course, this is only possible if the documented purity of the locale can be maintained.

In conclusion, this is not a book, it is an education. It is a resource. It is a reference. It is the culmination of the passion and experiences of Vincent Russo and many giants of herpetology who have gone before.

If you are only interested in a care sheet to keep a boa alive in captivity, or a guide to cranking out the best money-making morph of the moment, you won't enjoy this book.
But for those who are passionate about these magnificent animals, this book is a gift; it is a purchase you will never regret.

The Bible for keeping Boas

This book was recommended to me by a few other boa keepers. They swore by it as the must have bible for hobbyists and breeders. After receiving my copy 3 weeks ago I have to agree. This book lives up to the hype and truly is the "complete" boa constrictor book to have. If you keep boas you should own this book.

The best out there

This book has information that I have not found available anywhere else, and that's after really looking through many websites and forums.
It's not so much "hidden secrets" but a compendium of allot of information that is all centered into a single book rather than thousands of posts all over the interweb.

Things like reasons why a breeding pair landed only slugs, exact dosage of Antibiotics for Boas and so forth.

The book itself is beautiful and hardy.

I recommend it to anyone who is serious about his Boas.
